Decision Makers: Wes Moore

Preserve NASP Approval and Protect Its Future!!

Dear Alumni, Colleagues, School Psychologists, Students, and Friends, We, the students of Bowie State University’s School Psychology M.A./C.A.S. Program, are reaching out to ask for your support in advocating for the preservation of our program and its National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) approval.

Bowie State University has recently decided to suspend new enrollment into the School Psychology Program and not proceed with the NASP site visit for the 2026–2027 academic year, despite the program’s preparations for the review process. This decision raises serious concerns about the future of the program, as its current NASP conditional approval is set to expire in Spring 2027.

As the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Maryland offering a school psychology program, Bowie State University plays a vital role in preparing future school psychologists and increasing diversity within a profession experiencing a national shortage and significant underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities. The potential loss of NASP approval not only impacts current students who enrolled with the expectation of graduating from a NASP-approved program but also threatens future opportunities for students interested in pursuing school psychology at an HBCU.

We respectfully urge Bowie State University to reconsider its decision to cancel the NASP site visit, take the necessary steps to maintain NASP approval, and commit to preserving and strengthening the School Psychology Program for future generations.

We humbly ask for your support in advocating for the continuation of this important program. By signing this petition, you are standing alongside current students, alumni, educators, and school psychologists who believe in the importance of maintaining accessible and diverse pathways into the school psychology profession.

We also encourage supporters to contact Bowie State University’s President, Provost, and the University System of Maryland Board of Regents to express their concerns and advocate for the future of the program.

Preserving Bowie State University’s School Psychology Program means protecting current students, expanding opportunities for future students, and supporting greater representation within the school psychology profession. Thank you for your support and commitment to the future of school psychology.

Lack of transparency and pretending like they don't know their plans, while clearly planning to try to end our program. We asked direct questions and were met with non answers consistently. They are laying off more staff once again. So they invest in large buildings, but increase the class sizes, reduce the number of professors, and sacrifice the values their university claims to have. Their funding issues are not because of our program, but their incompetenct in keeping students enrolled.

Bowie State University is the only HBCU left that has a national accredited program for School Psychology. In a field that is fairly new and largely understaffed it it’s important not only to provide another outlet to bridge the gap for early burnout in our field but also provide a foundation for young professionals to learn through a cultural lens. The work done at BSU has made a major impact on the DMV area and has the potential to continue to positively impact students and communities.
