We ask San Marino High School to repeal the IXL requirement for Seniors during Monday homeroom and to fulfill the senior privileges that were promised.
Just before state testing, we were given the requirement to perform IXL assignments for the purpose of performing well on the State Test for the betterment of our school ranking, ourselves, and our senior benefits. Yet, even as CAASPP is no longer on our calendars, the test still haunts us, as we are required to study with IXL anyway. The original purpose of giving us a better foundation for CAASPP is no longer there. Even if the new purpose of it was to prepare us for college, many alumni come back describing SMHS coursework as more difficult and demanding than college. IXL has no place in SMHS coursework because, rather than being a stimulating assignment that teaches critical thinking along with higher levels of education, it is busy work. Rather than keeping homeroom as a buffer for students with sports, it is now a time for busy work that athletic seniors will have to make up.
Furthermore, during the Junior Year of the Class of 2027, we were told that if we surpassed La Cañada in State Testing, we would gain privileges such as free food trucks and early release to lunch. Even so, despite passing La Cañada by 5 places, we have been given no news on these promises.
We have been wronged and lied to for hard work: despite passing with flying colors, despite the fact that returning alumni repeatedly prove SMHS's already excellent ability to prepare seniors for college, and despite the fact that homeroom's original purpose was to support a student's schedule, we have still been given IXL during Monday Homeroom.
