Every family deserves to know that when they stay at a hotel, reasonable safety measures are in place to help protect their loved ones.

On April 25, 2026, my son, Marquise A. Browning, tragically lost his life while staying at a hotel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. During the investigation, our family learned that the hotel did not have security cameras in the guest hallways. While cameras were present in the lobby, there was no video footage from the area where critical events may have occurred.

This experience exposed what I believe is a dangerous gap in hotel safety requirements. Without hallway surveillance, law enforcement may have fewer tools to investigate serious incidents, and families can be left without important answers.

I am calling on lawmakers to pass legislation requiring hotels and similar lodging establishments to:

  • Install and maintain security cameras in all guest hallways and other common interior areas, while respecting guest privacy by not placing cameras inside rooms.
  • Store surveillance footage for a reasonable minimum period so it is available during investigations.
  • Ensure camera systems are properly maintained and functioning.
  • Establish penalties for hotels that fail to comply with these safety requirements.

This petition is not about invading anyone's privacy. It is about creating safer environments, helping deter crime, and providing valuable evidence when tragedies occur.

No family should have to experience the heartbreak of losing a loved one while also wondering whether simple safety measures could have helped provide answers.

I ask lawmakers to honor Marquise's memory by passing legislation that protects future hotel guests and strengthens public safety.

Please sign this petition and share it with others. Together, we can help create lasting change and work toward preventing other families from facing the same uncertainty and pain.
