To the United States Postal Service:

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Colfax, Indiana, respectfully petition the United States Postal Service to improve postal services for our community.

The residents of Colfax deserve reliable, accessible, and equitable postal services comparable to those provided in neighboring communities.

In February of 2026, issues with the post office building in Colfax led to a disruption of service. Now, in July of 2026, there still has not been a resolution to the issue. The current situation is that certain residents of Colfax must drive to Frankfort, Indiana to pick up their mail. This is a 30-minute drive each way.

We respectfully request the following:

1. Provide a Local Temporary Pickup Location During the Current Transition.
Since changes to postal operations require a temporary pickup location, we respectfully request that the USPS designate a location significantly closer to Colfax than Frankfort, Indiana. Requiring residents to travel approximately 30 minutes each way to Frankfort creates an unnecessary hardship, particularly for elderly residents, working families, individuals with disabilities, and those without reliable transportation. A closer temporary location would better serve the needs of our community while any transition is underway.

2. Maintain Local Postal Services.
We request that Colfax continue to have a functioning post office with public service hours on at least some days each week. Having access to a local postal counter is essential for mailing packages, purchasing postal products, sending certified mail, obtaining passports or other postal services when available, and picking up packages or oversized mail that cannot be delivered to a mailbox.

3. Restore Residential Mail Delivery.
We ask that the United States Postal Service provide home mail delivery to all the residents of Colfax, eliminating the requirement that some residents maintain a post office box in order to receive their mail. Home delivery would greatly improve accessibility for families, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and those with limited transportation.

The United States Postal Service exists to provide dependable mail service to every American community. We believe the residents of Colfax should have access to the same reasonable level of service enjoyed by many other communities across Indiana.

We respectfully urge the USPS to work with local officials and residents to develop a solution that ensures fair, reliable, and accessible postal service for the people of Colfax.

By signing this petition, we ask the United States Postal Service to carefully consider these requests and take prompt action to improve postal service for the Colfax community.

Respectfully submitted by the residents and supporters of Colfax, Indiana.

We have old people driving 20 miles for mail that don’t usually leave the community. It seems small but for them it certainly is not!

Our mail service has been so inconsistent since we moved to Colfax 7 years ago. This year we were having to drive to another county to even pick it up due to the conditions of the building and now we are in the same boat. This time it's even farther and many people can't get there for one reason or another. Please consider putting the whole down on a home delivery system. Some residents already have this but it's not been a town wide option yet and desperately needs to be!

Traveling to frankfort for our mail is a huge inconvenience. Our families work schedule doesn't allow us to make it to frankfort during business hours.

Half of this town (myself included) do not have mail boxes. This whole mail thing is getting absolutely rediculous. When I first moved here a couple months ago it was “oh it’s in Clark’s hill”. We had some weeks go by that seemed normal, and now it’s “USPS isn’t legally allowed in the building and all mail is in Frankfort”. Mind you that’s 22 miles away. How about get everyone who’s missing on the mail route LEGAL address’s with USPS and let us put mail boxes up.

It is very hard for me to get to frankfort during the open hours of the post office because of my job, when our mail was going to Clark’s hill I was not able to check it at all because I work a fulltime job and did not have time to go get my mail when the post office was open.
