We, the students of the University of Ghana, call for the immediate cancellation of the 15% increment in UGEL hall fees and for a reduction in accommodation fees where possible. Students deserve clear communication, accountability, and a real voice in decisions that affect our welfare and our ability to stay in school.
While rumours of a possible increase had been circulating, the University did not provide any official communication or explanation before the new fees suddenly appeared. That is not fair to students, who are already making difficult choices to keep up with their education and daily living costs. When fees rise without warning or proper consultation, it creates confusion, stress, and hardship for many in the student body.
Accommodation is not a luxury. For many of us, it is a basic need that makes learning possible. We cannot accept a system where students are expected to carry heavier financial burdens without transparency or respect. If the University is committed to student welfare, then it must listen to students, explain its decisions clearly, and reverse this increment.
We therefore demand the immediate scrapping of the 15% UGEL hall fees increment, along with meaningful steps to reduce accommodation fees where possible. Our education should not come at the expense of our financial stability.
Honestly speaking there should be a communiqué as to why fees are being increased. If fees are increased without any visible improve in maintenance and welfare of the student is very alarming.
