Protect DeKalb County Land & Farmland: Route the AEP Lulu-Sorenson 765 kV Line Along the State Line Road Corridor
TO: Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), AEP Transmission, and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) Project Leadership
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED landowners, residents, agricultural producers, and concerned community members of DeKalb County and surrounding areas, explicitly oppose any proposed route for the Lulu-Sorenson Transmission Improvements Project that bisects private property, prime farmland, family homes, and established timber stands.
We call upon AEP Transmission and I&M leadership to select the outermost eastern study segment corridor along State Line Road as the final project route.
WHAT IS HAPPENING?
AEP Transmission and I&M are currently selecting a final line route for the Lulu-Sorenson Transmission Improvements Project. This project will erect massive 175-foot-tall, 765 kV high-voltage transmission towers requiring a 180-to-200-foot-wide right-of-way cleared through local land.
Several proposed study segments cut diagonally directly through private property, active agricultural operations, mature timber stands, and residential acreage.
- Farmland & Drainage Risk: Diagonally bisecting active fields disrupts heavy machinery navigation, destroys vital subsurface tile drainage networks, and permanently reduces agricultural productivity.
- Property & Timber Destruction: Clearing 200-foot swaths through forested parcels causes irreparable damage to mature hardwood canopies, natural wildlife habitats, and private property values.
OUR PROPOSED SOLUTION: THE STATE LINE ROAD CORRIDOR
We recognize grid infrastructure mandates, but project planners must take the path that minimizes impact on private property owners. The outermost eastern route option running along State Line Road represents the most responsible choice because it:
1. Follows Existing Infrastructure: Co-locates high-voltage infrastructure along established state/county boundary corridors rather than slicing open private land.
2. Preserves Farmland & Woodlands: Keeps massive tower footprints off agricultural interiors and prevents unnecessary clear-cutting of timber acreage.
3. Minimizes Landowner Friction: Consolidates impact along existing right-of-way lines, reducing costly land disputes, agricultural disruption, and eminent domain battles.
WHO CAN HELP?
- Local Landowners & Farmers: Property owners directly or indirectly impacted by any proposed study segment.
- DeKalb & Neighboring County Residents: Citizens concerned about rural land conservation, property values, and agricultural economic stability.
- Elected Officials & Community Leaders: County Commissioners, Township Trustees, and State Representatives fighting for smart infrastructure placement.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW:
1. SIGN THIS PETITION: Add your voice to show project leadership that our community stands united against private property bisection.
2. SUBMIT FORMAL COMMENTS TO AEP: Submit written comments directly on the AEP Lulu-Sorenson project portal before the October 9 deadline, explicitly requesting route placement along the State Line corridor.
3. ATTEND THE OPEN HOUSES: Voice your stance in person at the upcoming public open houses:
- Wednesday, Sept 23 (5–7 PM): Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, Fort Wayne
- Thursday, Sept 24 (5–7 PM): Steuben Event Center, Angola
4. DO NOT SIGN EARLY EASEMENTS: Do not sign voluntary survey access or easement documents without independent legal counsel.

I am not able to edit the original content on my petition. However, I wanted to clarify that I only suggested what looked like the most logical route out of all they proposed. Each landowner has the right to fight for their property. The new logical route we could try & force the project overseers to consider is a path down Interstate I-69. The unfortunate thing is I'm sure this will also run into some private property. We can also try to fight for it not to go through our part of Indiana, although that would be an even bigger fight. Either way, someone loses. But, the least invasive route is the goal, which I'm sure we can all agree on.

A land owner who has received letter… Need to protect farmland wetlands and personal property and it’s values Use the outermost eastern study segment corridor along state line road as final project route…please and thank you.
We have old-growth forest on our land that we don’t want disturbed. We, as a species, need to be environmental stewards of this planet. I&M need to use the existing infrastructure ie roadways, railways, or underground.
The route you choose should be the straightest route possible. Not the options you are showing that cross and go over multiple middle of fields. I can't comprehend farmers having to farm around these enormous towers that could possibly be right in the middle of their fields. Common sense to me is a straight north/south path. Which on your map seems to be along the Indiana Ohio border
This will directly affect the property surrounding my home, and quite frankly, the portion of DeKalb County who has already had to endure huge electrical poles all the way down County Road 40 and beyond. My health, and the health and wellness of family members around me will be directly affected by these large scale utility poles.
I do not want any thing like that in or around my land
One of the proposed segments would cut my 4th generation farm directly in half diagonally covering just shy of 5000 feet. These lines go over two ponds ourselves, family and friends spend the majority of the summer at camping, fishing and spending quality time away from everything. Im not anti infrastructure but there needs to be some flexibility in the line placing even if it costs more. Please take into consideration the farms your effecting.
This directly impacts my property and my rights as landowner.

We love alongside the proposed route and do not want these alongside our property. We moved to the country for space. Also, they give off electric currents, no matter the amounts, but they are awful to look at and the construction is something we don't need around here. We do not want these by our property at all. Also, if tornadoes or something happens, with us being next to them, they could fall on our property. Property values will also go down. Which is not something wanted in our area.
