Keeping the Sailing Community in Metro Detroit alive depends on having new sailors getting experience and knowledge from those that can pass it on.
Grayhaven State Harbor is currently home to Edison Boat Club, a historic to Detroit 501C4 non profit entity, who's mission is to provide top notch sailing instruction, and nurture skills from beginners to advanced levels at an accessible rate since 1914. The DNR has decided to remove all "non-personal use" from Grayhaven, this change will prevent EBC rom operating it's sailing class.
The continued access by Edison Boat Club to Grayhaven is critical to the mission of delivering top notch sailing classes on the Detroit River. We encourage the DNR and Grayhaven Management to allow Edison Boat Club to continue to operate out of the marina and for our mission to not be disrupted.

The learn to sail program was life-changing for me! Sailed with EBC in 2014 and 2015 at a very pivotal and challenging time for me. Sailing eventually led me to racing and my now husband— and 4 children! Learn to sail programs provide connections and experiences unique and important to our community!
EBC provides access to the water to those who might not otherwise have it, through their adult learn to sail programs.
I took sailing lessons through Edison Boat Club and was a member for three years. It’s a wonderful and accessible program taught completely by volunteers. I plan to rejoin next summer after having to take a break due to surgeries.
Edison Boat Club provides the lowest cost access to sailing in Detroit. Rendering them homeless by removing them from Grayhaven State Harbor is grossly in conflict with the DNR's stated purpose of increasing the public's access to Michigan's waterways.
EBC is a historic non profit that has been offering the opportunity to learn how to sail at an affordable price point for so many decades. Having EBC continue to operate out of Grayhaven is crucial to keep the costs down and that we continue to give the diverse community across Detroit the chance to experience lake st. Claire and the Detroit River while learning new skills, engaging with the sailing community, learning how to lead as well as learning how to be a team player.
People of the Metro Detroit area should have access to the Great Lakes. And sailing is awesome. Just remember one hand for the boat one hand for yourself.

I have been a member of EBC for 40 some years and have seen hundreds of adults and juniors participate in the novice program. Many of them have continued sailing with their own boats and are better and safer sailors because of the EBC learn to sail program.
