We urge Byron to act now to keep our streets safe for the kids. As Byron grows, safety initiatives must grow as well. Traffic patterns have changed within the city limits, but speed limits, parking, and safe crossings have not kept pace with those changes.
Families in Byron deserve streets where children can walk to school and cross to the parks without fear. Right now, many residents are seeing the need for more to be done to protect young people and everyone else who uses these roads. When streets are designed for faster traffic, it puts kids, parents, and neighbors at risk and makes everyday trips feel unsafe.
We ask Byron to review current traffic conditions and put in stronger protections where they are needed most. That means clearer speed control, safer crossing points, and parking rules that support visibility and safe movement, not confusion and danger. Small changes can make a real difference, but they must be matched to the way the city is actually growing and changing.
This is about more than traffic. It is about whether children can get to school and the park safely, and whether families can trust the streets around them. Byron should make safety for kids a priority now, before more people are forced to take needless risks just to get where they need to go.
We are asking for:
1. Added stop sign to the crosswalk on 4th Street NE and Towne by BCRC. This will reduce traffic speeds and give individuals a safe place to cross during high traffic times.
2. No parking on the street by BCRC on 4th Street NE (or at least one side) to increase visibility for those to cross the street. There is plenty of parking in the lot-if not the lot needs to be expanded to accommodate for all evening activities.
3. Decreased speed limit on the entirety of 7th Street NE from Co Rd 3 to Co Rd 5. There is a neighborhood outlet, a roundabout, and two schools on this path and the speed limit should reflect.
4. Increased stop signs, traffic signals, flashing crosswalks on 4th Street NE by the Primary and Intermediate School.
5. Reduced speed limit on 10th Ave approaching roundabout (currently 40 by a school zone).
Can a 6th location be added to the petition ? Others and myself have commented here and also called the city about 4th St Ne from BCRC down the hill to cty rd 3. There also is two unmarked crosswalks. People have turned this road into a speedway they are driving down the hill at highway speeds. This is a new street and also needs managing as well. The crosswalks are at the end of the hill by this point cars are flying on and off cty rd 3.
