Jersey City should bring back the litter baskets it removed from heavily trafficked pedestrian areas and stop cutting a basic service that keeps our streets clean. The city says this is part of an “efficiency” study, but we have seen no clear explanation for why these baskets were targeted, and no real proof that removing them will help anyone. What we do know is simple: fewer litter baskets means more trash on the ground.
We believe more baskets, not fewer, are needed in Jersey City, especially along key pedestrian corridors like Newark Ave. and Little India. These are places where many people live, work, shop, and eat on the go. Litter containers help keep up with the daily mess that comes from busy sidewalks, car windows, and construction activity. If some baskets are being abused, the answer is better containers and better enforcement, not taking away service from the whole neighborhood.
The city and DPW have not been transparent about this decision or given a clear reason for removing the baskets they did. Even worse, there is no additional service planned to make up for what was taken away. That is not fair to the people who depend on clean, walkable streets.
It is also unfair to reduce a basic service while municipal property taxes, county taxes, and school taxes are all going up.
We ask the Mayor and Council to restore the litter baskets, increase coverage where it is needed most, and keep Jersey City clean for everyone who lives and works here. We want our litter baskets back.
As an overcrowded bustling city, I never understood why this would be a good idea. This plan is gives people the idea this OK to drop trash anywhere.
