Decision Makers: Abigail Spanberger

Every year, millions of Virginia drivers are required to pay for mandatory state vehicle inspections. While keeping unsafe vehicles off the road is an important goal, the current system places an unnecessary financial burden on hardworking families, seniors, students, and individuals already struggling with the rising cost of living.

Many drivers spend time and money on inspections even when their vehicles are well-maintained and have no safety issues. In some cases, minor defects that do not pose an immediate safety risk can lead to costly repairs before a vehicle can legally be driven. For many Virginians, this creates unnecessary stress and expense.

A growing number of states have eliminated mandatory annual safety inspections while continuing to enforce traffic laws, investigate unsafe vehicles, and hold drivers responsible for maintaining roadworthy vehicles. Virginia should consider modernizing its approach by ending mandatory yearly inspections and focusing enforcement on vehicles that are clearly unsafe or involved in violations.

By signing this petition, you are asking Virginia lawmakers to:

  • Repeal the law requiring annual state safety inspections for privately owned passenger vehicles.
  • Reduce unnecessary costs and government mandates for responsible vehicle owners.
  • Explore more efficient and cost-effective ways to promote road safety without requiring every vehicle to undergo a yearly inspection.

This petition is not about lowering safety standards. It is about finding a better balance between public safety, personal responsibility, and reducing unnecessary costs for Virginia residents.

If you believe Virginia should end mandatory annual vehicle inspections and pursue a more practical approach, please sign this petition and share it with your family and friends. Together, we can encourage lawmakers to reconsider this outdated requirement.

Safety inspections do not statistically reduce accidents or the number of fatalities/injuries. The auto mechanic lobby wants this law on the books to increase business since they fail unsuspecting owners with random issues and offer to fix on the spot for exhorbant prices which amounts to legalized extortion-

It's just another way for the state to have control and take money from us that we need for gas or food. Many other states don't do this and they have no issues with "unsafe" cars constantly crashing and killing people on the roads. It's just another racket.

Conflict of interest having repair shops trying to find things to repair on your vehicle. I had to call a trooper in last year to contest a bogus rejection. He agreed it was not justified.

We already pay for registration, personal property car tax, and car insurance that's "mandatory" so please eliminate some cost to help us better afford our lives. That is what you were hired for in the first place Abigail which is lowering costs or completely eliminating some costs for the Virginians that voted for you.

I think yearly mandatory inspections is absurd, I say do away with inspections every year

If government vehicles aren’t required. we shouldn’t be either and don’t need to pay money every year for them to tell me i need to spend more money for my vehicle to be “safe”

Some of the things that are inspected shouldn't even matter anyway my last inspection I failed last year due to the guy wanting to be in my back seat to check the seatbelts which worked anyway but I had a cat cage and he said I failed because he didn't want to move it to test the seatbelts which I had to go home unloaded it and took it back a week later when he had time just so he could sit in my back seat and check it. No one rides in my back seat.
