Dance is meant to be a place of expression, growth, and belonging. Too many dancers in Winnipeg, a majority of them women, have experienced attempted or actual predatory behaviour within our community. These experiences have too often gone unspoken, unaddressed, or unpunished.

This petition is a call to action for studio owners, showrunners, event organizers, and community leaders. We are asking them to take responsibility for the safety of the people they serve. To protect the privacy and safety of survivors, this petition does not name individuals or share personal accounts. Their experiences are real, and they deserve to be believed and supported.

By signing, you are asking our community leaders to commit to the following:

  • Adopt clear, written codes of conduct that address harassment, abuse, and predatory behaviour
  • Create safe, confidential ways for dancers to report concerns
  • Respond to reports promptly, fairly, and with consequences
  • Not provide platforms, stages, or positions of authority to those who harm others

Our goal is not to divide the community. It is to strengthen it. A community that listens to its members and acts on what it hears is one where everyone can dance without fear.

Please sign and share this petition to show that Winnipeg dancers stand together for accountability and safety.

I’d love to see dancers continue to create, grow, and thrive together. It’s unfortunate that some choose not to attend because they feel the need to avoid certain people. Every studio should be a safe space where dancers can express themselves, connect, and grow—not a place they feel they need to avoid.

Our community deserves to grow and flourish, I feel we’re always hindered to make that happen because these people are still allowed the power they don’t deserve. Especially when they use their titles for the most inappropriate and disgusting reasons. It saddens me they’re still given the opportunities for our younger generations to be blinded and taken advantage of, just the same as our past generations. We need to end this cycle of same predator, different prey and hold them accountable.

the experiences of dancers in our community should not be overlooked — and by not addressing these issues, that’s exactly what we’re doing. dance should be a safe space for everyone to express themselves without having to worry about a predator looking or thinking about them in a certain way. these individuals who cause harm and prevent others from doing what they love (dancing) should not be given a platform to showcase their work. let’s do better.

Was confused about how these people held power when I was younger and found out about it all. Still just as confused and floored that they keep getting away with it and then some.

for way too long we have lost dancers because of the behaviour of adults who should have known better. i want winnipeg’s community to grow into a place where people can dance, create, and pursue opportunities without having to wonder whether the adults around them will protect them. lets stop giving credibility and access to those who abused our trust with young dancers in our community time and time again.

Winnipeg's dance community deserves to flourish in spaces that are safe for everyone. It's disappointing that predatory people are still given platforms while so many stay silent. It's time to hold them accountable and break this toxic cycle. Thank you for being brave enough to speak up!

Too many voices I’ve heard behind closed doors with no justice or room to come forward. We need change

Every person who coaches sports- from 4 year old Timbit soccer to AAA 19u hockey has to complete Respect in Sport annually, and is upheld to those requirements. Dance has been overlooked. I would like to see every teacher and choreographer held to the same standards of respect that every other youth sport teacher/ coach is held to.
