their skills as a dancer/teacher does not justify their neglect of basic morals.

Winnipeg's dance community deserves to flourish in spaces that are safe for everyone. It's disappointing that predatory people are still given platforms while so many stay silent. It's time to hold them accountable and break this toxic cycle. Thank you for being brave enough to speak up!

Every person who coaches sports- from 4 year old Timbit soccer to AAA 19u hockey has to complete Respect in Sport annually, and is upheld to those requirements. Dance has been overlooked. I would like to see every teacher and choreographer held to the same standards of respect that every other youth sport teacher/ coach is held to.

As a younger person in the community, I look up to many dancers. I do not want to live in fear knowing that someone I may look up to can be the same person that can cause harm to people like myself.

Too much to be said on this topic, and I’m so proud of you for being the one to break the silence. I really hope this opens the door for more people to talk about the damage and trauma that can come from these experiences, and about how often those experiences are minimized, forgotten, or simply never talked about.

I’d love to see dancers continue to create, grow, and thrive together. It’s unfortunate that some choose not to attend because they feel the need to avoid certain people. Every studio should be a safe space where dancers can express themselves, connect, and grow—not a place they feel they need to avoid.

Our community deserves to grow and flourish, I feel we’re always hindered to make that happen because these people are still allowed the power they don’t deserve. Especially when they use their titles for the most inappropriate and disgusting reasons. It saddens me they’re still given the opportunities for our younger generations to be blinded and taken advantage of, just the same as our past generations. We need to end this cycle of same predator, different prey and hold them accountable.

I feel like this shouldn’t even be a question. Safe places for people to exist and give a sense of security is kind of a bare minimum requirement. Anything less is questionable at best on my opinion

the experiences of dancers in our community should not be overlooked — and by not addressing these issues, that’s exactly what we’re doing. dance should be a safe space for everyone to express themselves without having to worry about a predator looking or thinking about them in a certain way. these individuals who cause harm and prevent others from doing what they love (dancing) should not be given a platform to showcase their work. let’s do better.

Was confused about how these people held power when I was younger and found out about it all. Still just as confused and floored that they keep getting away with it and then some.

for way too long we have lost dancers because of the behaviour of adults who should have known better. i want winnipeg’s community to grow into a place where people can dance, create, and pursue opportunities without having to wonder whether the adults around them will protect them. lets stop giving credibility and access to those who abused our trust with young dancers in our community time and time again.
