The Arts Council of the Irish Republic has withdrawn its funding grant to the Western Writers' Centre, Galway. The Centre also runs the annual 'The Forge at Gort Festival' in Gort, Co. Galway and the literary news-letter, 'The Word Tree.' For almost seven years it has been the only such centre West of the Shannon. We are calling upon writers and those with an interest in writing to sign this petition to have the Arts Council restore our grant.
The silence from the Arts Council is wearing me down but I am not walking away from this. I have been reading your messages about what the Centre meant for local writers and it confirms why we have to keep pushing even when the path is unclear.

Seeing this level of support reminds me why we started this fight in the first place. It has been a long road and I am drained but the momentum here proves that people still value what we built in the West.

Literally just dont understand how they think this is a good idea. The west is always left behind when it comes to the arts. Fix this.

This is a disgrace. Galway has such a vibrant literary scene and cutting funding for the only center west of the shannon is just lazy. Keep it open!

Been a regular at the centre for years. It helped me get my first short story published. Dont let it die.

The Forge at Gort is a huge event for us. Really sad to see them struggling like this because of bureaucrats in Dublin who dont have a clue.
