S. degree in Distributed Studies (Zoology, Chemistry, and Microbiology) in 1985 from Iowa State University and an M.D. from The University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa in 1992. He completed his psychiatry residency, including a year as Chief Resident, in 1996 at the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Iowa. He has co-edited a practical book about consultation psychiatry with Dr. Robert G. Robinson entitled Psychosomatic Medicine: An Introduction to Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. As a clinician educator, among Dr. Amos’s most treasured achievements is the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. Dr. Amos was the sponsor of the resolution to support lifelong learning but oppose Maintenance of Licensure in Iowa. The resolution was co-sponsored by the Iowa Psychiatric Society. It was adopted by the Iowa Medical Society House of Delegates in April 2013. Dr. Amos writes a blog, http://thepracticalpsychosomaticist.com/ where more information about Maintenance of Certification and Maintenance of Licensure can be found. Another big issue for 2015 now is the planned closure of two of Iowa's Mental Institutes (MHIs) at Mt. Pleasant and Clarinda. This is highly controversial and shuts down access to inpatient psychiatric care. This is being driven by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad who has cut funding to the two hospitals.
