Atabey at 15 feet tall, is the world's largest underwater sculpture to be sunk and turned into an artificial reef. It's located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic in Sosua at a large project called Taino Bay. Atabey, in Taina (indigenous culture) history and mythology, is the Mother of the Land of the Taino people, and gave birth to the sea. Coral reefs are an integral ecosystem for local communities and draw tourism to the area which the locals depend on. Coral reefs sustain 25% of all marine life, which includes many fish stocks that provide food and livelihood to people. They also absorb 97% of the wave blows and storms that hit our shores. In this project, we're practicing micro fragmentation, a scientific technique that increases coral growth rates up to 50 times faster than your normal rate. These corals are cultivated in our nursery and transplanted over and around the sculpture, making it home to thousands of corals. This will attract thousands of divers to the area, thus lifting domestic and international tourism. The problem is this: Atabey needs to be moved properly with the proper equipment or else it will break, this has already happened once as you can see in the pictures and we need to prevent any further damage. We are in the process of getting a permit but unfortunately the manager of operations at the Taino Bay Company Javier Moreno doesn't want to wait and is attempting to move it without the proper equipment. There is big business backing these projects so we need as much public support as possible. We already have verbal confirmation of the permit but have to wait for the official written authority from the Navy Captaincy. Our next steps are: 1-Get Javier Moreno to wait on moving Atabey until we can get the official permit 2-Speed up the process for the permit through the Henry Ledisma who is the surveyor/inspector at the Navy Captaincy
