Mitochondrial diseases affect about one in 200 children each year. Not only does this affect 200 children directly but it affects future generations of families by being passed down by the carrier. Unfortunately, scientists have not been able to find a cure for treating these deadly diseases. However, the United Kingdom became the first country in the world to allow the procedure of three person in-vitro fertilization in 2015. This procedure prevents a mother from passing down a harmful genetic disease to her child and prevents families of having an economic burden due to the long health costs associated with mitochondrial diseases. My cousin lost her baby to this and it is just heartbreaking. science needs to get with the program because this could save so many lives.
