Why should you even care about congenital diseases? Well, an estimated 7.9 million infants are born with serious birth defects EVERY YEAR. And….we need YOU to make a difference.
Common congenital diseases in Macau include thalassemia, G6PD enzyme deficiency and BRCA gene related conditions. Some of these conditions can go undetected and the public knowledge in Macau is considerably inadequate. At present, the most effective solution is to do a basic genetic test.
Unfortunately, this test is not available in Macau. Local hospitals can only offer accurate testing for a limited range of diseases (e.g. breast cancer caused by the BRCA gene). Worse still, the exorbitant prices (starting from MOP 4000) discourage people from getting proper medical treatment in their early stage.
To make a difference, we created this petition in an attempt to improve the awareness of congenital disease. Our aim is to urge the Macau government, not just to subsidise certain blood tests, but also to provide funding for basic genetic test, which is currently only available in Hong Kong.
We can’t do this alone. Together let’s take action NOW.

These accounts confirm that the current financial burden on families is unsustainable and speaks to a clear need for government intervention. I am currently compiling these experiences to present a formal request for subsidized testing options to the relevant health authorities.

Finally someone is speaking out about this. My cousin had to go all the way to HK for this and it cost a fortune. Thanks for doing this!
MOP 4000 is way too high for a normal family. we need the government to step up and help us out with these costs.
