As a former BAEF Fellow (1959-61), I urge the Belgian government to increase the funding of such federal institutions as the Royal Library, the Royal Archives, and the Royal Museums. These are in the forefront of making Belgium a major player in international cultural initiatives, and for the government to reduce their funds even further than it has already done, is the equivalent of shooting itself in the foot.

Institutions such as CEGESOMA have a record of producing excellent scholarship and providing first-class research facilities. They are rightly recognised as world-class by scholars around the world. The proposed budgetary cuts will severely damage scholarly research into aspects crucial to Belgian and European history and limit the role of history within broader Belgian society. Given the global reputation of these institutions, it would also be a matter of great international embarrassment for the Belgian state if it were to reduce their activities drastically.

Since this government doesn't seriously consider our future, why expect it to seriously consider our past?

Money "saved" in this way would be the biggest waste.

These precious cultural institutions must be properly funded. They give so much to visitors to Belgium, both scholars and tourists.

Le istituzioni culturali non possono scomparire solo perchè alcuni "signori" che si occupano solo di finanza decretano leggi assurde

The Royal Library is home to a huge collection of manuscripts. We need continuing good access, and improvements if possible. The Library is not a huge burden: every effort should be made to secure its accessibility for the future.
