President, Barack Obama, The White House Office of National HIV/AIDS Policy 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC Dear President Obama, As you are aware, one American is infected with the HIV virus every nine and a half minutes. Well over a million Americans have been diagnosed with AIDS to date. Of those, over half a million have already died and the remaining half a million are currently living with HIV/AIDS. Tragically, in recent years, this disease has begun to disproportionately attack the most at risk and vulnerable communities; 44% of all cases being within the African-American community and 19% within the Hispanic community. Though gay and bisexual men make up half of newly diagnosed cases, it is far from just a gay disease. Heterosexuals make up 24% and IV drug users make up the remaining 25%. Women make up over 80% of the cases diagnosed among heterosexuals and the majority of those are women of color. Today, almost half of all gay and bisexual men of color are infected. Furthermore, almost four thousand youths under the age of 13 have HIV/AIDS. We, the undersigned, are encouraged that you and your Office of National HIV/AIDS Policy are committed to developing a coordinated, measurable and successful National HIV/AIDS Strategy to address the HIV epidemic in the United States.
