1. The City of Winnipeg is the largest city in Canada without a rapid transit system; 2. Rapid transit is vital to Winnipeg\'s development as a prosperous, accessible, innovative, sustainable and welcoming city; 3. The construction of a rapid transit system for Winnipeg, using dedicated transit ways, will reduce congestion, decrease greenhouse gas emissions and car use, strengthen our local economy, support downtown and existing neighbourhoods, encourage more compact, pedestrian-friendly land development and improve our environment. 4. The Government of Canada has offered $500 million in funding for transit projects in Canada, conditional on a public commitment being made no later than March 31, 2008. We urge the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba and the Government of Canada to commit to the funding of the first phase of a rapid transit system for Winnipeg.
