Wide beams against licence increase

I am happy to pay my dues, and I understand that it is my choice to have a wide boat and enjoy less than a quarter of the canal system, however, this is still an unfair albeit an 'easy' targeting. Until ALL users of the canal system are licensed, we should not be made to pay more.

We have dutch barge on the Leeds & Liverpool. This is a wide beam canal first and foremost, in fact narrowboats were prohibited. As we can only travel 3/4s of the systemhow can this be fair !!!

As an owner of a Fairline Mirage and think it’s totally unfair that we are to pay more when narrowboats take much more room on the river and at moorings, they should be paying more.

I do not think this is fair, some wide beams are much shorter than narrowboats and therefore do not take up more space

Why charge people more for being able to use less of the network? We should be getting a discount.

My cruiser is over 7ft beam but at 30ft length it is 20ft shorter than the average narrow boat. It takes up less mooring space. It has limited usage of the canals not only through width but height of bridges (8ft) and depth (3ft). I accept that bit why should I be penalised for using less!!!!!!! I already pay more per mile than the narrow boats. When I suggested it was calculated on user area or overall volume is was told it would be too difficult to work out.

Our barge is permanently moored. Rarely moves. Perhaps once or twice a year, if that! Considering we could only use a fraction of the waterways anyway. I don't feel it's fair to pay EXTRA. For what exactly?! I think tolled bridges is a wonderful idea. If you use the waterways, pay for the distance you travel. Of course I agree with the water licience. But don't feel larger boats (especially non moving ones!) should be penalized.

Charge pedestrians..cyclists..runners..why penalise boaters for using waterways designed specifically for boats?

its narrow boats that try to sqeeze through 1 gate in locks thus wearing the domino boards where as broad beams open both gates and cause less wear

I responded to the review and also felt my comments were completely ignored and felt that the review process and the organisation conducting it were biased towards increasing wide beam fees and that de isions had already been made

I filled in the consultation document and pointed out that increasing the fees for wide beam boats with limited access to the network is nonsense! My views and that of a great many users has been ignored!

I believe the ridiculous reason given for this increase is because widebeams use more water. This cannot possibly be the case given the huge network of waterways that widebeams do not have access to. And indeed, even on waterways that they do, there are limited mooring and facilities. When are the Canal and River Trust going to tell the truth about what they are doing?

I refuse to become a massive, & increasing, source of income for C&RT just because my boat is 13’ wide. I already pay £5k+ for moorings as there are NO suitable/available C&RT moorings in our area. Totally & absolute theft.

Already paying for a lot of the canal system that I can’t access. New scheme is decisive and won’t raise sufficient funds so why cause divide?
