In December, the WIAA banned “chants by student sections directed at opponents and/or opponents’ supporters that are clearly intended to disrespect.” The examples that they referenced were ones that were quite harmless such as, "scoreboard," and "you can't do that." I have been participating in the Badger High School Fan Section for over four years now, and intend to do so for many more years after graduation, as I will always be a Badger, and will always support my school. The new rule implemented by the WIAA is quite unnecessary, and takes away the fun and FRIENDLY conduct between school student sections. They make the 'W' in WIAA stand for 'Whining' instead of 'Wisconsin.' I have been to a number of different games and have never heard anything remotely close to a racial slur or profanity. This new ruling makes it near impossible to say anything in a student section - someone will always take it personally and be offended, no matter the extremity of the phrase used. Please take a moment, and sign this petition to retract this ruling from the WIAA.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I think there's a lot more the WIAA should be worrying about then the chanting. We're not in elementary school anymore, were varsity athletes give us a freakin break.

High School sports never would have been the same without my student section. Sometimes when you are a small school and not one of the best teams out there playing all you have to keep your heads up, is the student section cheering you on. Gets players adrenaline up. If a player can handle getting fouled, elbowed, held on to, the silent mutter under another players breath, full on pushed from behind... A crowds voice or opinion should be the last of our worries. The next play, the action, our coaches words... That is what we worry about on the court. Not a chant.

Don't take the fun out of basketball games. If players can't handle students chanting "air ball" then they should not play. The chants being taken away are not vulgar, sexist, nor racist. With that being said, they should be allowed

I believe that sometimes the parents are worse than the student sections. Start dealing with that and leave the fun loving fan spirit alone!!!

I think this is crap. Student sections are supposed to be fun, places where students can get a little rowdy and pump their team up. I enjoy going to our high school games and starting chants to get the team, the student section, and the crowd/community pumped up during the games.
