As a family and community medicine physician In Sacramento, I know that violence harms the health of those directly and indirectly touched by it. When one of our community is sick, our community as a whole becomes sicker. Please make change to improve our community’s health, rather than to worsen it, in this fragile time. We now have an opportunity to do the right thing and be national leaders in health and humanity by ending the escalation of violence and beginning real work against systemic racism.

As a community, it is imperative that we stand in solidarity and support of the anti-racist uprising occurring across this nation. Increasing militarization will only increase the unjust injury of black and brown people by the police, the very action which these protests exist to call out. Sacramento leadership must embrace this moment as an opportunity to be true national leaders in advancing this conversation and de-escalating the violence through political action.

Extending the stay at home order is not dealing with the issue. People are protesting despite any such orders. Face the important issue of racism and injustice. Be LEADERS and not oppressors. People can protest and be safe if real leaders show empathy and understanding for all of the strife that exists right now in our community. Address the issues - don't run from them.

Continuing the state of emergency in order to suppress free speech is deeply unAmerican. Systemic racism has damaged our society and injured our communities in so many profound ways. It needs to be addressed, not violently ignored. Vote no on this proclamation.

As a physician in Sacramento County, every day that I work in the clinic or hospital I see some of the harms that racism does to black and brown people. One of the more tangible harms is physical violence perpetrated by the State via the police. I urge you to take this moment to stand up and say "This is wrong, and it will not continue" by voting NO to continued militarization of law enforcement.

Please do not criminalize this situation. Approving a local state of emergency or using other forms of force to create "law and order" will only further divide this county as it is sign of lack of understanding of the burden of decades-long discrimination against our African-American and minority communities.
