PLEASE put a Costco in Hilo. We are the county seat and are tired of paying inflated prices and having poorer choices for our families.

Costco gauges their store placement by demographic membership studies. They cannot get a true demographic study of the East side membership and our expenditures. Many families on the east side have family members spend thousands of dollars annually using their memberships thus not accurately reflecting Costco's financial demographic records. Costco says they need to hit the million dollar mark monthly to make a profit here. Considering the generous administrative compensation given by the Department of Agriculture for their accepting the SNAP/EBT program and the dollar for dollar reimbursement along with the actual individual and business dollar spent, they will easily meet that mark. Previously, Costco said they would never participate in the Food Stamp program because "...they are not a grocery store and if people are receiving that type of help, they cannot afford to be shopping at their warehouse...". That was a direct quote from a the corporate office when I called because a friend of mine could not use her card their to feed her family. Imagine that, 2/3 of their inventory is food yet their are not a grocery store? Then they finally ran the numbers and saw the "true" picture.

As I recall, Costco was planning on opening a store in the Shipman Industrial Park in Keaau, but then the recession hit and they scrubbed the plan. Costco knows exactly how much of their Kona business come from the Hilo side. They may be worried about losing too much business in Kona if they open a second store in Hilo. They shouldn't -- both stores will be hugely successful.

We drive over every three weeks and make do the other weeks. When we lived in arizona we went to costco two and three times a week. Costco LISTEN....we really prefer to spend our money at costco. Living in Hawaii we have lots of visitors and that means lots of items for feeding and entertainment.

I totally agree. Hilo needs a Costco. Oahu has about three Costco's and our Big Island has one only. It's on the opposite side of the island in Kona. So far away....

You know they owned the land that Target is sitting on for YEARS and the city wouldn't let them put one in. It isn't that Costco is unwilling it's that Walmart and the good old boys don't want competition.

About time we have a Costco in East Hawaii, does not necessarily have to be in Hilo. I'm sure our growing population can support both Costco locations. Please send this link to all your family and friends.

Please, please please allow American capitalism to help us all with healthy competition. We have a stable and growing population of families, not the transitory touristy economy of the Kona side.
