Here is a Break down of The demographics of The Population of the East Side Of Big Island:

Puna- 49,800

South Hilo- 48,600

North Hilo- 1,700

Kau- 7,700

Hamakua- 7,000

Total for East Side: 114,800

Here is the West Side:

North Kohala- 9,400

South Kohala- 2,170

North Kona- 37,900

South Kona- 12,680

Total For West Side: 62,150

This a conservative number from 2015 and are not entirely accurate as more people move here everyday.

Costco Gauges their ability to open a new store based on the population numbers but how can they say there is not enough people in Hilo when our numbers for the East Side districts are far more than on the west side.

A 4 hour round trip drive to Costco is too long. We can't even buy frozen food items for fear they will be defrosted by the time we get home. We have ice chests and we buy ice at Costco. Still not enough. Hilo side of the island needs a Costco!!!

Another argument: The West Side Costco appears to be running at above capacity. Crowded aisles, lines waiting for gas, lack of sufficient parking. So another store would ease that burden and make it better for all island Costco shoppers.

As a former co-worker of Craig Jelenik, I wish he would realize the need and viability of a Costco location on the East side of The Big Island. Tourists if Kona don’t stay through the year as residents of eastern Big Island do. Many more residents here than tourists there.

With our current population and growth rate, the eastside of the Big Island would certainly sustain a Costco store. A store located in the Keaau area (Shipman?) would draw people from the Hilo, Volcano and Puna areas. Perfect!!!

I know Hilo will benefit from having a Costco. Pharmacy benefits for our seniors is a start. I dont even renew my membership because Kona is just to far to drive for groceries, if Costco was in Hilo I would keep my membership current and shop there more often.

Costco said it needs a % of members from east side in order to open store. What they do not understand is that it take half a tank of gas & 3 plus hour drive to shop in Kona. So most people do not have a membership on the east side.

The lines and crowds are becoming unbearable at the Kona Costco. Costco needs to consider that not only do locals shop there, but our island swells with tourist shoppers.

East side of the Island of Hawaii has much denser population than West side. Costco is a necessity!
