After chores and homework, my 3 children sit and watch either Disney Channel, or Nickelodeon. Show after show, after show, I see nothing that my children can relate to. You see, my children are African American. There are no children on the shows that look like my children or have the same issues that my children have. This causes major underlying self esteem issues with my children as it probably does with yours. I have now banned my kids from watching Disney Channel and Nickelodeon unless they are watching one of the 3 prominantly African American shows: "That's so Raven" which is in syndication, "Corey in the House," or "True Jackson, VP" all which show very rarely. It is sad that even though there are millions of minorities that contribute financially to these companies, we are treated as though we are invisible. Our children deserve to be acknowleged. And they deserve to feel like they matter. By Disney and Nickelodeon refusing to put on shows that also cater to minority children, they are sending a message to your children. Do you like that message You don't have to lie down and accept that. One African American woman put together an online petition for Disney to create an African American Princess. It being long overdue is an understatement. The petition got through to them and there will be an African American Princess out this year. Please take just a second and join me in pursuing this important issue. Together, we can make a difference in our children's lives.
