Our children’s safety is of the utmost importance to all of us. As parents of Westchase Elementary School students It has come to our attention that Westchase Elementary School does not have a CPR trained individual in the cafeteria supervising our children during their lunch period. Westchase cafeteria staff members are not CPR trained and are not capable of providing assistance to our children in the event of a life threatening emergency. In the event of an emergency every second is crucial. A trained individual could not only provide a life saving procedure, but will immediately alert the nurse in the school office and assess the urgency of the situation. Without a trained individual in the cafeteria, our children are vulnerable. Incidents of children choking in school cafeterias are very common and well documented. http://www.wtnh.com/dpp/news/new_london_cty/principal-helps-choking-student http://www.bendbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20101004/NEWS0107/10040329/1001/NEWS01&nav_category= http://www.dailycommercial.com/060810hotdog  http://www.wsbt.com/news/local/62415587.html

As recently as June of 2010, a child at East Ridge Middle School in the Orlando area died after choking on a hotdog in the school cafeteria. http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2010-06-07/news/os-lake-student-chokes-20100607_1_hot-dog-school-cafeteria-student A neighboring school, (Deer park Elementary) has already implemented a program in their school cafeteria to remedy this concern. Deer Park Elementary maintains a CPR trained individual whose sole responsibility is to supervise the children during their lunch period. This program is exclusively parent funded. As concerned parents we urge you to join us in signing this petition requesting the approval from the Administration at Westchase Elementary to allow us to hire a CPR trained individual to directly supervise our children in the cafeteria during all lunch periods. Funding this program would cost approximately $10 per year per child, and would ensure the safety of our children.

Seriously? How is this not a requirement already? My son eats there every single day and it scares me to death knowing nobody is prepared for a choking emergency.
