I have had two children go through this class, and it definitely should be weighed.

This is long overdue. I took 10 AP classes, two ARCC classes and CIS Lit and Lang at Irondale. Though rewarding, the CIS classes were by far the most demanding and difficult classes I took. They deserve to be weighted as AP classes are. No good reason exists not to do it.

Both of the CIS classes offered at Irondale during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school year were the most significant courses in preparing me for college and my career. The intensity of reading and writing was not matched in my college classes and I still refer to what I learned in my career.

So a "college" class is not weighted? That makes no sense. Anything above the regular classes should be weighted.

I took CIS Comp. and Lit. in 2009-2010, and they were the courses that best prepared me for college-level work. Giving them the same weight as AP classes makes sense.

As a former CIS student I know it is a more difficult class than AP Lit and Lang. The CIS courses ask more of students and expose them to literature that goes beyond the canon, leading to more well-rounded readers and thinkers. Plenty of my peers chose not to take CIS because of its reputation for being difficult, even though it offers them transfer credits for college not dependent upon one final test. It would be in the interest of the school district and in the best interest of the students to weight CIS courses at least as heavily as AP courses.

Having taken 5 AP courses and 2 CIS courses in high school, I can say that, while all were scholastically demanding, no class was a a greater challenge than CIS Composition. No class had a greater impact on my collegiate career, and the fact that it and CIS Lit aren't weighted makes no sense to me or anyone who has taken them.

I took CIS 2011-2012. It was one of the most challenging courses I took in high school (and I took 6 AP classes and two CIS classes). It was also by far the single most beneficial class in preparing me for college and adult life.

CIS courses are just as if not more rigorous than AP courses and those are weighted. High school students should be rewarded for the time and effort they put into school to get the the point of taking CIS English. Give them this small thing to show how they’re hard work paid off.

As a teacher of both the AP Literature and the CIS Composition and Literature courses, I can affirm that CIS is more rigorous, more aligned with the work students will do at college, and more STEAM focused.
