What was the original purpose for creating public schools in the United States? To educate the children who would one day be expected to take over the responsibilities of self-government. And what was considered the most important subject for American children? HINT: It's the subject most neglected by Common Core.

For this purpose the reading in the first stage, where they will receive their whole education, is proposed, as has been said, to be chiefly historical.
History by apprising them of the past will enable them to judge of the future; it will avail them of the experience of other times and other nations; it will qualify them as judges of the actions and designs of men; it will enable them to know ambition under every disguise it may assume; and knowing it, to defeat its views.
In every government on earth is some trace of human weakness, some germ of corruption and degeneracy, which cunning will discover, and wickedness insensibly open, cultivate, and improve.
Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves therefore are its only safe depositories.
And to render even them safe their minds must be improved to a certain degree. This indeed is not all that is necessary, though it be essentially necessary. An amendment of our constitution must here come in aid of the public education.
The influence over government must be shared among all the people. If every individual which composes their mass participates of the ultimate authority, the government will be safe; because the corrupting the whole mass will exceed any private resources of wealth: and public ones cannot be provided but by levies on the people.

My child will never attend a school that uses common core, will never use a textbook that aligns with common core or take a standardized test that aligns with common core. We will leave in droves to private schools or to homeschool. I will not support any candidate that doesn't fight common core.

Let's work FOR our kids, not AGAINST them. Common core isn't helping our teachers or our kids. It's hurting everyone involved!

teachers need to be allowed to teach subjects to the students that will help them truly get an education, not teach to test scores so they can keep their jobs and satisfy politicians

We are raising 2 of our grandchildren. They are in 3rd & 7th grade. Our 3rd grader has cerebral palsy. The garbage she has been taught this year has caused her so much stress that she has sleep problems & nervous habits that made her teacher think she had ADHD. After seeing a counselor it was determined that it was all stress related to school. Do you think any child should have to go through that? NO! They shouldn't! Stop this outrages mess now! No to Common Core!

I absolutely opposed Common Core. End it now! My kids, who are straight A students, used to LOVE school. They still love education; they HATE/DREAD school.

We need a return to responsibility for parents and students. Data mining is out of control and far too intrusive. The 'new math" is asinine, the history is both incorrect and incomplete. These kids will not be able to compete in a global economy.
