Government policy towards Travellers for the last 60 years has been an utter disgrace. Forcing a nomadic group into fixed accommodation and forcing them to conform to a way of life that is utterly at odds to their core beliefs and values is nothing short of criminal. An apology by the current government would be purely symbolic and cannot erase generations and generations of hurt, shame and fear but it may begin to close the senseless divide between the 'settled' and Travelling communities that has been caused largely as a result of ignorant, insensitive and uncaring policies of previous government administrations.

Irish Government I urge you to give a formal apology to the Traveller community for the harm this state has done to them . We have oppressed and discriminated against Travellers for very many years. As a 'settled' person I believe this would be an important first step in righting the wrongs of the past and help build an Irish society based on equality and justice. Travellers are a distinct ethnic group and your denial of this fact only adds to the hurt and discrimination Travellers experience on a day to day basis. Apology & Recognition NOW!

Not before time there was always a clean healthy way of life for the travelling people rather than the land lord hovels bringing on all sorts of sickness long before the so called Famine . to say today's travellers are a product of the Famine is untrue as their ancestors were in Ireland from the 1500s. And Their way of life was a way open for those Irish who were left homeless due to evictions and their cabins demolished .also survivors of the famine who took to the road in stead of the famine ships . Could that have been a start of intermingling with the older Travelling families who root are with the earlier Travailing people . I am wondering maybe that was why the theory that Travellers were a product of evictions or the Famine . Now we know thanks to John Connors and friends .

There are good and bad People in every society, all the bad people are not linked to the Travelling Community.

Worthy cause. Cultural genocide is an unfortunately accurate title.

Throughout my life I have been shown generosity, kindness, friendship and respect from Irish Travellers I am ashamed of this nations "injustice, discrimination, dehumanisation and racism" shown to them.
