As a queer alum of the university, this is incredibly disappointing to see. Current and future students deserve better.

I graduated from UWEC in 2020 and Chris played an immense role in supporting me in my time as a student. Chris is an incredible leader and advocate for all students and has developed many events that help foster community and make UWEC feel like a home away from home.

We need EDI at UWEC and we need to fight back against the blatant hatred being spread.

Chris helped make UWEC the most queer-friendly Wisconsin school. Q-fest and Fireball have an immediate positive impact on the culture of the university. I can’t imagine UWEC without Chris and these programs.

This firing goes against the values our university claims to stand behind. Students will not allow that to happen.

One of UWEC's main draws for many students is its position as a top school in the nation for LGBTQ friendliness. An attack on that is an attack on the student body as a whole, one that threatens to drive down enrollment rates and tear a hole in the campus culture that keeps UWEC a vibrant, thriving and healthy college.

Chris was and is the pinnacle of on campus inclusion efforts, and was one of the main reasons I decided to finish my education at UW Eau Claire. He deserves to be a part of the wonderful campus community he worked so hard to help build.

I’m disgusted by the University's decision. I stand with Chris. This is not the UWEC I once knew.

I chose to go to UWEC because it was very LGBTQ+ friendly, and I knew I would be safe on campus there. I recommended UWEC to my friends from high school for this reason. I can no longer say that I can give them this same recommendation, because Chris and the position that he holds are integral to the safety, inclusion, and well-being of LGBTQ+ students on campus. Many students on campus are LGBTQ+ because many choose to go here due to the inclusion work that Chris has done. This will likely impact the amount of students who decide to attend this university, because so many of us need the work that the GSRC does.

To Gregg Heinselman and Mike Carney, your refusal to stand up for your students and instead decide to give into prejudice, bigotry, and hatred is more than shameful. As an institution of knowledge and the betterment of our communities, I ask you to think about the precedent you are setting and the legacy you would like to leave behind.

Lots of work that chris does is what makes the UWEC campus so special.
