As a parent I have to wonder what message firing Officer Mitch sends to our children; don't speak up, don't report suspicious comments? Should we be creating a fear of being publicly ridiculed for warning others? No, we should be publicly recognizing this as doing the right thing. The school board needs to admit they dropped the ball on this one.

I am a Croatan student and I believe that it would've been more wrong if he HADN'T spread news of a potential threat! This man deserves to hold him job and receive community support. Thank you for all you do! I support Mitch!

As a parent I would have made the same choice to inform the school. We are blessed nothing came of this threat, very possibly because of Officer Schelinder's quick action. Thank you for your service Officer Schelinder and for your dedication to the children of Carteret County.

We are so grateful for his consistent service to White Oak Elementary school! He stands in the middle of 5 lanes of traffic every morning and afternoon, rain or shine, and directs traffic with a SMILE on his face! Without him- two officers have not been able to efficiently manage and my daughter asks every morning where the friendly officer is. My husband and I have both discussed how his presence at the school makes us both feel more at ease.

As a grandparent I was glad He did what he did my grandchildren attend CHS and BCMS. It is pretty amazing don't you think there was a school shooting the next day. I feel he may have prevented it from possibly happening.

We seriously need to be rewarding our front line defense and not be so quick to punish them for keeping people informed and safe!

From the bottom of my heart, I can't thank you enough for your love and support during this trying time for my family. I understand any opinions on how I handled the situation, but the bottom line is "as a father of two children at Croatan, my intent was to pass on the information on my private Facebook page. I was warning about a potential shooting at Croatan High School, and reported it immediately to Principle Poletti, Croatan SRO Fred Meadows, and Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck. Only after taking care of that did I post on Facebook friends. Thankfully the threat turned out not to be valid. Carteret County School reacted immediately, wanting me removed for the school. They expect an apology, but won't get one. My job as a parent is to protect my kids. My job as SRO is to protect every student, teacher, and visitor who enters those halls. Most mass shootings start out as plots. The best example was 9-11. The government received information of people hijacking planes and crashing them into buildings. They had difficulty finding who was making that 'chatter" and missed a couple vital clues. All threats, no matter how real or valid they are, need to be extensively investigated. We in law enforcement don't have the luxury of Monday morning quarterbacking. I was looking out for my kids and always will. My fear now is a kid or teacher will be afraid to say anything of a possible threat, in fear of being fired. I apologize for nothing on how I handled this situation. Thank you all for the most wonderful support.

Mabe we as parents and voters need to remember the actions taken by our elected school board members when it's time to do it again. Thank you Officer Mitch for caring about our children!
