Congratulation to Officer Schelinder for alerting parents of a potential threat. He made the school system look foolish for ignoring the threat.

Mitch is a fine man and a neighbor that I respect. He was only trying to protect our children. You have to take those kind of threats very seriously as he did. They are fools for letting him go!!! He loves the kids. He deserves to have his job back!!!!

This is absurd but I'm very sorry to say it's not the first time the school system has taken a potential threat too lightly. It's horrible that they are punishing this man for doing the job that they should have done.

I personally do not know this officer however in my previous career we've always been told safety was first. the school board system has made decisions on their own without notifying parents to the last minute. my question would be, what if their child was in the school and they were not a board member. Would they be thankful for what he did or would they still want him to suspended. In today's, society, one can NEVER be to careful.

If my child was in that school I would give him a hug and kiss and thank God it was a false alarm.

There is no way of knowing if a rumor will become a fact, or remain a lurking threat. We must protect our children, and believe the school made the wrong decision. I support the officer's action and his decision making abilities.

Officer Mitch should not have been let go for caring about the students just because someone else didn't do their job.

I think it is prudent to err on the side of caution and better safe than sorry philosophy. The school system just made a decision to close schools early because of flooding concerns. So if it doesn't flood should we dismiss the superintendent? Let's welcome political correctness to the Carteret County School system.

I have two daughters in Croatan High and since you have not educated our children what to do in an active threat situation I am glad that someone is looking out for our children. It was false okay but what would have happened if it does happen and the next time no Cape Carteret Police Officer says anything because they will be suspended or fired.

As a mother of 4 children that walked the halls of WOES, BCMS and CHS, I support what Officer Mitch did in an effort to let parents know about the potential danger at CHS. His post, in NO way, affected his ability to do his job at WOES. With the current conditions of the world today, I appreciate what Officer Mitch did.
