When you aren't accountable to the people, you feel no need to represent Canada, you only represent you. But I want my senators to represent Canada. The latest actions of this Senator does not reflect Canada.

Unless these teachers created an underground railroad, or risked their lives to save these children's lives, any act of kindness was likely to cover their own shame in light of overwhelming failure. Who would want such a legacy acknowledged, when you belonged to an establishment that has ruined a peoples identity? To publically celebrate a few good deeds, is a mockery to the pain the survivors endure.

immediate resignation please. to praise those who were working within this abusive system is misleading, twisted and illogical. she would be suspended immediately from EU parliment, as was the case yesterday of Polish MP Korwin-Mikke who was suspended from Parliament for statements about women. Belay's statements are in my opinion worse, as they trivialize a genocide. Unconstitutional.

There are cemeteries filled with residential school children who were raped, abused, and killed through negligence and cruelty. This person does not deserve to represent the Canadian people in any way after showing such lack of sympathy or knowledge for Canada's tragic past.

Teachers & administrators have passed on; their intentions, feelings & reputations are not relevant anymore in any case. Many survivors, on the other hand, are with us still, continuing to suffer painful emotional, psychological, social & economic consequences of the schools. The Residential system was evil; it will not become any less evil, no matter how many teachers may or may not be deemed "well intentioned". And if the Senator is concerned about how teachers' descendants may feel about this public stigma ... maybe she should imagine the stigma, pain & torment that must still be the experience of the many poor souls who lived through it.

The comments made by Senator Beyak are very insensitive and disrespectful to our Canadian Indigenous people who have had to struggle against theft of land and resources, cultural genocide, oppression, systemic inequality and discrimination, disregard of treaties.. etc...With the overwhelming historical documents and personal testimonies, one can only conclude there was nothing good about residential schools. Please apologize and resign!
