I believe the Miwok story but even so, a name change needs to be a local community decision, not by outsiders looking for political lime-light. We chose to live in Terra Linda for the Dixie School District; an association with the confederate south had never occurred to us. Should the local community with to pursue a name change, the cost cannot be allowed to deteriorate the quality of our education and programming.

I grew up one block away from this school, and my brother attended school there. The name change is IDIOTIC .

My aunt, Josephine Codoni Leary Burke was the last teacher in the old one-room school (see the plaque on the restored school). She often used the name to teach her dozen or so students about the name and the meaning of "Dixie." While the students learned about Dixie and the South, her teaching was always positive, especially regarding the progress we made toward equality for all. If she were alive today, I am totally sure that Aunt Josephine would oppose renaming the school and district.

What nonsense! Focus on continuing the best education for the children. Teach them the difference between bleeding-heart liberalism and reality. These kind of fruitless, ridiculous efforts to read macabre meaning into every little word in our nations history is what will eventually lead to the downfall of our society.
I wonder if the "name-changers" ever drank from Dixie cups? Or listened to the Dixie Chicks? Heaven forbid!

You have my total support. I acknowledge American history, both the good and bad, and realize that Dixie school has nothing to do with the Civil War. I deplore the busybodies who are getting their 15 minutes of fame in this hate- mongering fashion.
