Petition for Focusing on the Children

Please save the Dixie name. All 5 of our kids have been with Dixie School District for 17 years. Please save the name.

My 2 children were taught inclusion and what I consider "anti-bigotry" for their entire school years in the Dixie district. I saw or heard not one case of racism.

"Dixie" in Terra Linda, if ever it had had a confederate connotation, has all its years and through all its history long since transcended such a notion: here and now it stands on it's own merit. Maybe it is time for Websters to add a second meaning: the very soul of education.

I attended Dixie school district (Mary E. Silveira and Miller Creek Jr. High 1961-1969). Please keep the name that is still associated with its excellent reputation.

What is the purpose of creating racism where there is none? In fact the opposite exists, a community and school district of kindness and inclusiveness. This is a sad waste of time and money and is dividing a very wonderful community. Please stop This foolishness.

There are some who believe the name Dixie is derived from the reference to the slave holding confederate states as, "Dixie". Not all agree, but assuming this is correct, and that it justifies changing the name. Where do we stop? Both Washington and Jefferson were slave holders. Should we not remove their likeness from Mt. Rushmore? How about destroying all one & two dollar bills, since Washington's likeness is on the one, & Jefferson's is on the two? All cities and streets named after Washington or Jefferson should be re-named. Shouldn't we destroy the Washington monument too. Slavery existed in Africa long before Europeans arrived in the new world, and it still exists there to this day. Americans didn't invade Africa and capture slaves. The stronger African nations conquered and enslaved the weaker African nations, then sold them to Portuguese slave traders, who sold them to Europeans and Americans. Shouldn't we change the name of anything associated with Africa? It's long past time to end this debate, and focus our attention, energy, and finances on more important issues that will add to the quality of our children's' education.

Our children went to Dixie, proud of Dixie School District. Keep Dixie is Dixie.
