I should not have to choose between my health and the health of my family, or losing my job. In addition, returning to school is not safe for students.

I would love to see school reopen and the best version of learning take place. However, we are not at that point. Numbers are higher than ever and we need to keep the safety of everyone our 1st priority. The idea of cohorts is great, if that is the only cohort. Once we start adding up all the various cohorts one person (let alone family) is a part of, the number of contacts grows exponentially.

Picture this: A lower grade classroom asked to reduce its paper usage (what will children draw on, cut, etc). A teacher that can't touch, hug, console a child who is crying. A sick child place in quarantine somewhere on campus all alone until they can be picked up. Children unable to really play together because toys and extras have been removed to accommodate proper desk spacing. For all intents and purposes it's a sterile environment where warmth and love has been replaced with masks, PPE, and distance. Neither hybrid or distance learning are ideal, but at least distance learning protects our underpaid teachers who are deserving of so much more.

We all want to get back to life as normal, but realistically, that is a ways off for the US. Make the call now to have online learning and take the time to implement a good strategy rather than trying to plan for too many options.

Students can’t be returned to school until it is safe for them and our community. If public schools are forcing in-person education, I’ll seek other private alternatives.

It is far too risky to have our children spend time in an indoor environment that allows for conditions that increases the length of floating time of dangerous airborne particles. Mask or no mask, this is not an idea that I would ever consider for my child in school.

Of course the ideal situation would be to send students and teachers back to school full time, but we are not living in ideal circumstances. In these circumstances we must prioritize the health and safety of teachers, school staff, and students. My children will not return to the classroom until the safety of all people on campus is considered and protected.
