Winnifred Beach is the only Beach run by members of the community in Jamaica the efforts to keep the Beach rustic and natural make it true Jamaican.

Winnifred has always been and should always remain a place for real people, real life and can’t take this ridiculous notion of ‘improvement’. Leave us alone. We good. The last minion that pontificated for improvement down there hadn’t even spent a day there, imagine suit and tie and shoes on a beach. Chill .

Our Government's pass and present are no good for the people that elect them to serve it's a crying shame that none of them sees it fit to protect our waters when they all sell it to foreigners leaving the Islanders beachless and in time landless

Anthony Bourdain opened my eyes to this problem. I can't believe that an island people could lose access to just about their last beach, and a beautiful one at that. No resorts!

Such beautiful & responsible local people more than deserve access to their beach, and their is long term precedence for them having this well-deserved access.

Allison Stalker

Good luck to all of you, I hope you are successful

Casey Ford

All beaches should be public! All Oregon beaches are public and Hawaii as well. It can work! Best of luck!

Sheril Smith

Good job all! You should put this petition on change.org for wider appeal.

This beach needs to be kept free for everybody but mostly for the hardworking people who live in Jamaica to enjoy.

Christopher Evans

Big Business should be ashamed and any Government who would sell their own beaches off to the highest bidder, do not belong in power! Save the Beach! Fight the Power!

Moore

I watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain's show when he visited Jamaica. It was very disturbing to seer him speaking to a group of Jamaicans who are working desperately to preserve one of our public beaches. I see that there are all these residential properties now been sold by beaches that are now deemed private. ..The ordinary Jamaican deserves to go to the beach as we all grew up doing. To the government or all parties involved please allow the Jamaican people to also enjoy their beaches.Everybody should be able to enjoy the comforts of their country -No whey no better than yard...........

Elliot Williams

This beach is for the people!

Laura Hinckley

Please keep the beautiful beach available for the beautiful Jamaican people. Thank you!

I'm Portlader now living in the US Im now 33 years old and have been coming to this beach ever since I was a kid so UDC leave the people of Fairyhill and its environs alone you already sold everything you get your hands on leave these people to enjoy what was given to them.

Tisha

I am signing this petition, because I believe the people of Jamaica have every right to have access to not only Winnifred Beach, but should be allowed access to all beaches. I support the rights and lives of Jamaicans. Aloha from Hawai'i. #WeareMaunaKea

Don't imperially interfere with the people's abilities for navigating and protecting their public beach, their infrastructure, and their freedom.

It's absurd to even THINK that the cousin would decide to take actions that would prevent public access of its native citizens to the Last Remaining Beach of their island home. I would think the government would have already set aside even more of its property for public/native citizens long before now when the very decision to sell property to outside private citizens. Money seems to be so important that even one of your own , native born, citizens has not one thought of using his personal resources to bless the island and his fellow islanders. Karma chameleon. It's Shameful.

Bianca bazzocchi

Free the beach! Free the people!

nicola robinson

The people should have acess to beaches across the island. There are no public beaches in Ocho Rios..it's horrible. The government must stop destroying the land and the birth rights of the natives.

Isabell Unger

It is a shame, that so many beaches are private in jamaica. Jamaica belongs to all people who live in jamaica and people who wanna enjoy jamaica in a positive way and meet and respect the locals!

Khamp Thongrivong

I have seen it in Cozumel. With a few beaches available, the locals have to travel far to find a nice beach to escape the heat or go to an abandoned hotel site. Government must do more to help to ensure the beach is available to the citizens. Additionally, make sure citizen beach goers have bathrooms to use.

Greetings from Scandinavia. I really hope that the beach will remain as it is, free for the jamaican people to use. Anything else would be heartless. Its that simple. This pearl, this wonderful public place is worth preserving.

judy fix

i love jamaica nd her people, and have so happy in my visits to Portland to swim and play at Winnifred beach. It belongs to the people of Jamaica - we all know that. It must stay free.

Kim Watson

I am a local and this is my favorite beach! Its the only decent beach left. Port Antionio does not need anymore hotels because they're simply not enough tourist coming to maximize the capacity of the ones already in existence. Save Winnifred!

How can you take public beach from the people, all beaches are public regardless of what properties are built around them.

This beach is one of the few free beaches left on the island. In a island known as the land of wood and water i believe everyone should have access to this bit of paradise without any monetary figure attached.

We cannot change every piece of Jamaica for the sake of tourism and or what may be deemed as civilized progress Nature outshine every attempt by man to manicure his sourroundings. The people deserve to have a access to the few remaining untouched portions of Jamaica

This is a beautiful beach and it would be a huge disservice to Jamaican citizens, and especially those in Port Antonio, if it was closed to the public

We recently spent time at Winnifred beach and it was beautiful. As an Australian the idea of paying to visit the beach seems unnatural and while other beaches in Jamaica were pretty, I didn't go where I had to pay. Keep Winnifred for the public!!

allie walker

Keep it alive... beautiful place

Rolando Wright

I strongly support keeping Winnifred Beach free to the public. As a native Jamaican, it is painful to return home to Large Conglomerate and unsavoury politicians selling out all the gems that make Jamaica a truly special place. It is an even more egregious shame that our local people are being fought to have sovereignty over the land of their birth. We have been raped by colonialism and it is time that we can have something that is truly Jamaican for the Jamaican people. Let us save Winnifred beach from the corporate assassins, and let it be a model for how Jamaicans can take back what our forefathers and slaved and died for.

gina rose

Keep it pristine and respect mother earth and all that inhabit <3

What the rich are doing to the ppl of Jamaica and the beach access is criminal!!! They should ne ashamed! I am praying for them and Their beach! Let them have Their home and their beautiful nature. Stop taking their Jamaica for tourists and money!! Stop trying to run them out of their own country out of greed! Makes me what to boycott going on vacation their so Jamaicans can have Their home back. Stop over running them! I wish them well, and pray for them and their freedom of their Own country!

Enjoying the beauty of what makes Jamaica what we love, requires leaving as much as we can "unspoiled". Its horrible that the "tourist experience" (everywhere) created by the big name resorts, etc. drives out the very foundation of what brings the people. The authenticity. The feeling of being in another part of the world. This requires stepping into unfamiliar bounds... In every sense of the word. Our inability to step out of our comfort zone has created an industry that is tearing the natural beauty we travel to see from the very people that ARE that beauty. The locals are being driven from the waterfront, replaced with gated access resorts that separate the authenticity from everyone. Island locals without the ability to go to the beach, as well as the travelers with the ability to step out of their normal surroundings. Authenticity over The "Hollywood highlights" of a culture.

Angela Ozee

Winnifred beach IS the people of Jamaica's beach! & thats what makes it so beautiful!......Keep it pure Jamaica!

Ken MacKenzie

Citizens need places like this for mental health. The ocean is a powerful healing agent and access to it must be protected for the people.

jonnoy miller

Winnifred beach is one of natures treasures, nature is for everyone irregardless of race, nationality or social group. I admire this petition by the local residents and overseas personals who have come to love our land even more than us as they help in the fight to protect and keep winnifred beach for all walks of life to enjoy. The residents of the area have my respect, such a movement is heart warming.

Rita

Please keep this beach free. The road to the beach desperately needs repair

Jason Cook

I have never personally been to Jamaica, but when I do finally get there. I will visit Winnifred beach. I understand the local populous wanted to keep this a public beach and keeping the private investors out. When I come to Jamaica, I want to meet the local people. Not a banker from Pittsburgh on vacation.

Krishan

Our world is there for everybody to live, not for someone to sell!

R Grant

Stop selling your soul Jamaica

Phil

I have visited this beach on a visit to Port Antonio. This needs to be kept available to the Jamaican people, they also have the right as human beings to enjoy nature. Why should the poor be denied access to such a natural resources just because they are poor. Barbados does not sell off its beaches to the rich! Jamaica needs to stop selling its jewels and think long term as to the many consequences of this approach!

Lloyd Williams

This beach must remain for the people of Fairy Hill, The people of Portland, and of Jamaica. That was the first place I remember going to on a Sunday School picnic as a young child going to Bethesda Gospel Hall

Chloe Carter

Myself & my husband are from the UK, when we come to Jamaica we head for Portland as we like the undeveloped feel. We use Winnifreds beach regulary & would certainly stop coming to Jamaica & relocate our vacations to a less developed island if the use of these public beaches changed to a tourist/urban development. The beauty of Jamaica for tourist is that it has some untouched parts where locals can live & local culture can thrive, if this changes the beauty & unique feel of the place will cease, so eventually tourist will look to other islands that are less developed.

D'Andra Montaque

How can you be a caring and selfless person if you are trying to take away a public beach from the people born, raised and living in Jamaica? Just for a profit? For money? To have for your own selfish view two or three months out of the year? I cannot fathom it. We must stand strong and unite together to ensure this beach is for the people with their birthright.

Pamela Campbell

I think it is great for jamaican to have the opportunity to use the beach You can't have all these big development Coming here . Then push the natives aside P Campbell

Pim van Santen

No Comment. The beauty of this beach says it all and it HAS TO STAY PUBLIC!! From the Netherlands.

Petter Strand

The government must stop privatising the coast for tourism, and by that excluding the locals. Most tourist wants it raw and natural, and the real sense of getting include by the local people can only happen in a diversity of interactions in public places. Not private beaches.

When will the Jamaican authorities learn that they cannot treat people and the environment as garbage. Shame on you.Show more respect for the Jamaican people and the environment.

Marjan de Bruin-Maxwell

As John Maxwell said in the Jamaica Observer, in 2006: "Finally, the PM [referring to PM Portia Simpson-Miller] mentioned in her speech that the government will be developing Winnifred Beach and Reach Falls in Portland. I think she should be advised to look closely at the proposals for these inherited schemes. Winnifred Beach at Fairy Hill is part of the  former administration’s programme to take away public beaches from the public and to chase away the people who make their  livings there. If our community tourism is to mean anything it must mean that our few public beaches must remain public. While no body can be more than 25 miles from the sea anywhere in Jamaica, Jamaicans are increasingly being walled off from their recreational heritage. Most have never been to a beach !"

Anita Vonk

Not another beach for development. It has to stay public!

Yvonne Arist Cunningham

We need public kin Jamaica

Tricia

Keep it free! Nothing in Jamaica is free for Jamaicans anymore. Does Jamaica belong to us?
