Wayzata Elementary School Start Times

I want a later start for elementary at Oakwood. 7:45am is too early for elementary kids. Thanks for your consideration.

I am fine with shift in time. I think high schoolers can benefit with later time. I do have concerns with such early times for elementary so adding buses seem like best deal.

Waking up early is real life training for teenagers. Stop babying them

Please keep the the start times as-is. The domino effect of the proposed change would create huge economic hardship for families to cover child care until they finish their work day. In addition, this will create a developmental hardship on the youngest students who need 9-10 hours of sleep each night. Moving their start time earlier by such a significant amount upsets the entire routine and dynamic of families throughout the district. If a child has to go to bed two hours earlier, that significantly reduces the amount of time they have to interact with their parents and older siblings. Please prioritize childhood development and family wellbeing, and do not change the start times.

I do not think it is okay to have young children up so early. Sleep is essential to brain development and performance in school. How are they expected to grow and learn if they are sleep deprived!

I'd be OK with adding extra buses to allow the high school start times to change if the board/superintendent insists on having the high school start later, as long as the elementary and middle schools' start times stay as they are.

If a change in start time for HS is going to improve our students performance, let's do just that: change HS schedule but let's make sure we have a goal and a way to measure the "improved performance we expect".

Let's change what we say will improve performance (but also let's commit to a measurable result, not just to the change)

It is unfair to have elementary school students start school early as a solution for lack of sleeping issue for high schoolers. Young kids need sleep too.

I'm strongly against option B. I want to support status Quo. I think we will need to come up with other ways to solve the lack of sleeping issue for high school students instead of the proposed idea about early starting time for elementary school students. That's not reasonal for little kids.

i cannot figure out why late start for high schoool students has to be achieved by sacrificing our little kids. they need sleep too.

The research is not supporting the proposal and the impact on life outside school for the children and their families. Increases in before and afterschool programs will be needed, older children will be in school later and not able to care for younger children after school, younger children will be at higher risk waiting for busses due to the cold/darkness. This would put too much strain on families with two working parents. Wayzata students are already in the top percentile in the state, the incremental benefit would not outweigh the costs with this change.

Run for school board

My children go to Greenwood and the current start time is already to early in my opinion. All you have to do is look into their eyes at the end of the week and you know they are tired. This proposed plan is not a good plan for the school district and is probably really being driven by finances. Do not put our children at risk in the dark winter mornings and icy roads of Minnesota. This is a liability the school district will be taking on.....finance before safety is not a good way to operate any operation, company or school district. Figure out another way to add additional buses.

Elementary school sets the foundation for middle and high school. Research is already suggesting that kids who are sleep deprived suffer academically. For five years - you let them suffer and expect miracles in the later stages!! This is an absolute ridiculous move and the question is really - on what basis???

This proposal does not serve the best interest of children as a whole. We need a proposal that meets the needs of elementary, middle and high school students.

We will consider moving elsewhere if this happens. Shame to make such a significant change which impacts all young families without more consultation and thought.

This is not a win for our Grade School children - it is a huge risk with the potential to have negative impact on a great school district which is leading the way academically in this country - why would we change what is working? The statistics are not there to support this change for grade school. Please do not make this change.

I really disagree with the early start time.

We have already considered pulling our kids out of the Wayzata school system if the start times for our school causes inconvenience, limitation, hardship or conflict with extra-curricular and family obligations (for example: employment, private sports clubs, in-home child care availability, religious education AND private arts/performance instruction). Do you think any of the kid's private organizations/clubs are going to bend their start times, simply because Wayzata stands alone on this change? No. These organizations serve the greater Twin Cities, not Wayzata students only. Wayzata is not an island. Please make your final decision soon so we have adequate time to find a school better suited for the lifestyle of our family and children. Thank you!
