My 3rd grader goes to bed at 7:45pm for late start elementary. If she gets moved to early start she would need to be in bed by 5:45pm and I would barely make it home to say goodnight. This is crazy to think about starting the kids who need the most sleep the earliest!

No child, be it elementary, middle school, or high school, should be asked to be at school before 8am. Elementary children need 11-13 hours of sleep, more sleep than is needed by middle school or high school; as a result, it is especially ridiculous that we are asking the students that need the most sleep to get the least amount of sleep. It will cause daycare issues and additional expenses. It will cause safety issues having such little children outside so early in this MN weather. It will mean some children with working parents will spend over TEN hours at school. It will put children with chronic health problems (ADD, ADHD, epilepsy, etc.) at higher risk since studies have proven that sleep is crucial for these children.

If 6am is too early for a high school student who needs 9 hours of sleep to be awake, then it would without question be too early for an elementary student who needs 13 hours of sleep. If later start times are beneficial for the high school that's fine, but we cannot offer our youngest children up as a sacrifice.

Please keep the timings of elementary school as is, changing time puts enormous amount of stress in young children and families, this will also put young kids away from parents for a long time which is not good for the development.

Elementary school students are too small to be out that early on the day and in cold days, which is most of the school days living in MN. This means kids should go to bed at 6 to 7 PM in the evening to get enough sleep, this also means working parents should leave work and be home to care for kids when they come off school, which is not possible for most parents so they need to spend 500 per kid for after school arrangements, which will be tough on kids to have such a long day without parent care say typically from 6:45AM to atleast 5PM in the evening, so they get to be with parents only 2 to 3 hours per day when they are awake, does the school board really thinks these are good for young children and families...I think high school students are big enough to handle all of the above situations and be able to spend that extra time in the evenings for sports/reading activities. So please consider keeping the timings same for young children and add more buses...

Please explore additional scenarios and options for our elementary students, getting on the bus before 7:00 am is not in their best interest.

Please keep in mind the behavioral and packed of sending our children early. Also, please think about the cold winters and asking them to stand in the dark at 6:45 AM when the temperatures are below zero. Activity schedules are not going to change based on early start time. Dual working parents are going to have to spend at least $500 a month on childcare.

Last time I checked, young elementary school children need 10-12 hours of sleep per night. Are we supposed to put our kids to bed at 6pm?

Early start for elementary school students will put kids in unsafe cold and dark early morning bus pickups.

This is a ridiculous proposal. Kids ages 5-9 should not be walking to the bus stop in the dark this winter. Icy roads, kids in the dark, and peak commuting time for drivers is a recipe for putting young kids in dangerous situations. The safety of young children should take precedence over the cost of adding more buses. We just passed a $109 million referendum for this school district...they should be able to figure out how to move money around and put more buses on the schedule.

Health and interests of elementary students should not be compromised to protect those of high school students.

that's to early for the elementary school children, most high schoolers would only stay up later. I think the first option is the most reasonable

Do not change start times, My 2 current high schoolers actually like the early start times. This gives them time after school for athletics and study. My 5th grader likes her start time and is ready to wake up 1 hr earlier next year.

Such early start time for elementary schools is ridiculous for all the reasons in petition. Add more buses to fix high school start time or may be look at the option of changing times of their athletic or other activities that are keeping them up so late. At the end whatever time the school starts duration is still ~7hrs. so late start time for high school does not magically provide more time to them. They still have to get their work done in same number of hours. I do not have any kids in high school yet and may not understand their issues... but for me problem seems to be with their time-management, a skill I think they should learn.

This totally screws up the day for little kids and their parents. It just extends their days even longer with after school care and then they have even less time at home with parents before going to bed early. The school board is so short sighted on this.

If this is truly a matter of sleep, I don't see how shifting the problem from young adults to the smallest of children makes any sense. I know my small kids and their friends are NOT up at 7 let alone 6 to catch a bus.
