Chicago needs to preserve our history and architecture!

Ground zero for underground music and culture in the Midwest. Like Stax, Sun, Motown, Dischord, Sub Pop and countless other regional purveyors, the Wax Trax! store and record label's roots grew deep and wide, fostering a strong local scene, establishing a trademark sound and style, and, ultimately, creating a ravenous national and international following that, once again, put Chicago squarely on the cultural map. I was one of those kids that followed along intently from afar, scouring the bins at my local shops for the latest Wax Trax! releases, wishing that I could visit the Lincoln Avenue shop and experience some of that magic (the building was and still is a pilgrimage site for many). And I can safely say that Wax Trax! changed my life.

I remember wax track when it first opened, and would go there often, often just to browse. When walking by, I would always, always stop in.

Wax Trax was such an amazing and unique place. It’s where I discovered the Sisters of Mercy, Nick Cave, the Birthday Party, etc. Everyone should have a place like this in their past.

Wax Trax! was, and in some ways still is, an important nodal point in Chicago culture, every bit as much as the CSO or long-gone stage theater. We lose these places and their memories at our peril as we forget what shaped us and how we got where we are.

Wax Trax was incredibly important to my young adult years and my exposure to the music I have loved my whole life. I would not be who I am today if it were not for them. They gave me the music that soothed my soul when I didn't know how to put my anxiety into words.
