I remember my big Saturday night out in the late 80s and early 90s was heading down to the city from the western suburbs of Chicago with my friends, all of us in our late teens, and visiting WaxTrax Records. It was introduced to us by my much older brother, who a decade earlier had visited during the Punk explosion. The excitement was palpable as we mined our version of gold - the record collection that so carefully curated, the sounds in the store giving us an earful of music that we loved and couldn't purchase anywhere else. It was more than a record store to us, it was our youthful identity, a secret club that we knew about and for once belonged to, as so much of our days found us not fitting in anywhere else. This store and its corresponding record label forged an entire genre of music with a unique sound that became the anthems at local clubs like Medusas and Neo, not to mention clubs around the world that catered to alternative music fans. Chicago was electrified during this period and brought musicians and fans from all over the country to our city. Later on in life, I have gained rockstar status in my own right from people who were fans of the label, but lived far away and never visited themselves. "You used to go to WaxTrax? That's so cool!" My heart was broken when the store closed, and I still drive by it when possible and give it a wave. I am sure I'm not alone. This place was special to so many of us, its influence was far and wide. It would be a shame not to give this place a special status with the city of Chicago.

Though I didn't live in the Chicago area, mail order was also a significant part of the Wax Trax! legacy. To think of how many records, posters, apparel etc were picked, packed and shipped directly from this historic space, thus shaping the lives of people everywhere, make Wax Trax! a national treasure worthy of preservation.

Many folks, like me, from downstate IL would make a pilgrimage to the store- very important culturally beyond Chicago.
