Washington Street Homeless Shelter

I'm on CHHOP's board. The new site is NOT in *addition* to, but a REPLACEMENT for, the present site, which is rented from a developer and is now in foreclosure, so Jan Peek can't stay there even if we wanted to. The Washington site is zoned commercial, not residential, and has auto repair shops and a church on either side and a strip of woods in the rear between it and residential housing. You're being misled by fearmongers. I wonder what their ulterior motives are?

I don’t mind there being a homeless shelter in town, but it does not belong in a residential area. Simple as that.

Frank Catalina made some good points: CHOP is a private organization; is there an ulterior financial motive (grants) for this that they haven't revealed? Will the shelter end up housing homeless people from outside Peekskill; if so, that is not acceptable. Also, why do they need another facility additional to the Jan Peek facility? (which is in an industrial area, btw). Shelters such as this, which I agree are a benefit to society, should not be located in residential areas.

This location is ill-advised for several reasons not the least of which is congestion in an already busy section of Washington Street as well as the likely adverse impact to the residential neighborhood.

There are plenty of vacant buildings in Peekskill NOT in residential areas that could be used for this purpose. The location should be closer to other resources available to this population.

I agree - No homeless shelter should be located in a residential area.

For years the CHOP organization has served Peekskill in many ways. My opposition to this move, in addition to most of what was stated by others, is that they are secretive about their numbers..... how many are actually using the shelter overnight and how many of those are actually from Peekskill. I call upon CHOP to live up to their press releases and be transparent and give us the actual numbers (average persons per night per month). When the actual numbers (which I am told is far less than 7-8 in winter months and less than 4-5 the rest of the year) are shown, the real reason behind this will be shown to be the desire of a very small group to grab as many county, state and federal grants per year as possible and turn this into a multi-million dollar per year operation that will simply become the go-to shelter for the entire County north of Rt 287. No one in opposition is against helping those in OUR AREA who are in need, but Peekskill should not be the dumping ground for all the County's needy.

No homeless shelter in Peekskill

No residential home owners or renters should deal with the disturbance of homeless people in the area. They should be treated as equal, but not around families where children will be disturbed or questioning parents of what is happening to their neighbor right next door knocking on their window for food or money for extra support. Crime within the homeless shelter is already occurring and it does not need to proceed into the center of the city.

Does not belong in a residential area where there are mostly single family homes. Something to remember come election time.

Where did it become a city secession without the people that pay taxes in Peekskill ! Not one city elect has said anything about this is concerning ! Aren’t you there for the people of Peekskill

Homeless Shelters and in particular Methadone Clinics should not be in residential neighborhoods but a secure hospital setting.

Not good location it will affect the quality of life for the neighborhood.
