I fully support the list of demands created by BSU and if Warren Wilson does not then they are proving that they are a school that only cares for black lives when it’s convenient and profitable, which is how they have shown up in the past.

Warren Wilson has continued to avoid progress. We already know it is a racist institution. WWC is a part of the problem. WWC has been a part of the problem. I have seen teachers spread bigotry covertly and overtly, be reported upon, and then go unchecked/remain employed by the institution. When yall do budget cuts, you dont have to fire supervisors of valued work crews. you need to fire the racist professors and administrators who continue to hurt our institution by deferring progress.

Petition, demands, and dialogues are only our first wave. We will make the changes we need with or without administrative support, this is just an invitation. If you ignore us now, know you won't be able to ignore us for long.

During my time at WWC, I saw an alarming amount of racial insensitivity. Conversations about racial justice and equity were consistently co-opted by white students and administrators—it’s time to step back, listen, and then actually make a change. All talk and no action doesn’t amount to anything. WWC, your Black Students Matter!

Concrete change needs to come collectively and locally. Warren Wilson has consistently failed it's students of color and side stepped responsibility for change. Enacting these demands requires putting black and brown voices at the forefront of restructuring our school, while white people put in the work to step back, educate ourselves, and create equitable structures. Warren Wilson is uniquely community oriented, and students play a key role in running the school and harboring that community alongside faculty and staff. This gives us an opportunity to push our school farther than most other school can to create a horizontal and collaborative community that truly supports all it's members. This work is not easy, but necessary if we want to truly embody our values of community and equity. The few students, faculty, and staff of color have been putting in the majority of the work for too long to make Wilson a safe campus, foster a sense of belonging, and correct racist carriculums. It is time for white folk to step up. This work affects us all. We all become better versions of ourselves and our community when we listen, adapt and find the humility and motivation to change the toxic structures that actively harm our community members. There is no "good" or "right" under racism. All white folk have failed and we all hold responsibility, for letting our structures continue to uphold it for so long. That's why it's long overdue that we take responsibility and enact the change we all know is needed. The inconvenience of reforming our school cannot compare to what black folk have to go through just to exist at a PWI. White students stand behind BSU in their demands, will actively push for change, and help enact it.

While I haven't yet attended WWC (I'll be attending in the fall), I want to do what I can for my future classmates to foster further steps that will support students of color, as well as faculty and staff. Change is possible and change is necessary. Black lives matter.
