I am an AEA member. This proposal threatens both my career and my ability to make art. Please vote NO. And then let us hope that Equity actually pays attention instead of simply doing what they want to do on this extremely important matter.

I started my career with 99 seat theaters and I can't stand to see them go. So many artistic types need these oportunities to do what they love.

A lot of Equity Actors who have just received their card still use 99 seat Theater as a way of expression, creation, education and experience. This is especially true when there are low Equity audition opportunities (compared with New York City and other locations). Entire theater companies create new works and develop acting skills by allowing Equity actors to work on their craft by volunteering their time and talent willingly, to raise their resumes to a different tier, and to make connections with other creatives that will last a lifetime (and that translate into full-paid Equity contracts in the future). Find a different way to keep the 99 Seat Equity plan intact - allow AEA actors to donate their time (maybe create other incentives like a % profit in the show if it goes on tour or on Broadway, or tax writeoffs per hour of rehearsal/performance, etc) instead of eliminating the contract altogether. There is a balance to be found.

No one wants this, Equity. There is no silent majority that supports this course of action. If your policy can't reflect the overwhelming consensus of your own membership base in Los Angeles... how can you really be our Union?

The proposal has no concern for the community of theatre artists in LA. The plan polarizes us with no regard for all artists in this profession. theatre rises when actors, directors, producers achieve and share in the vision and financial rewards equitably. This plan provides none of that.
