As an artist, creator, producer and former AEA member, I am against anything that hinders creativity. Period. I believe Equity should be in the business of helping to encourage, stimulate, nurture, and grow the artistry, craft and performance opportunities of it's membership. Not stifle them. LA theatre actors, creatives and producers are heros. With every production they fight against over-whelming odds to bring art, joy, inspiration and beauty into the world. Instead of stifling creativity, I believe Equity should look at initiatives such as raising the cap producers can charge for tickets. This type of forward thinking could make 99-seat theatre a breakeven proposition in LA, and stimulate and encourage new and expanded creation throughout our community. Ultimately art, like water, will always find a way and we will continue to create and make art no matter what the outcome.

I am an AEA member and was at the recent town hall meeting addressing this subject. The majority of members present were not in favor of anything as drastic as what AEA is now proposing. The tiered contract system based on budget size that a majority favored has not been addressed by AEA. A delusional, vocal minority believe that if 99 seat theaters are driven out of business, a bunch of new mid-size theaters offering AEA contracts will magically appear.

L.A. actors need the 99-seat plan. L.A. actors want the 99-seat plan. L.A. directors and designers who work in 99-seat theaters want the 99-seat plan. Theatergoers want the 99-seat plan. Anyone who is part of our thriving 99-seat theater scene needs the 99-seat plan. Do not alienate your membership with this ill-conceived "plan." Expect a fight on your hands the likes of which you have never seen if this new "plan" becomes realilty.

I've produced, directed, written and acted in 99 seat theaters since the early 1990's. I strongly encourage scrapping the recent proposal and working with the Theatrical Producers League of LA to craft an agreement that fosters excellence and fairness. You're hearing a lot of discontent from your LA union members because they know from experience that what you're proposing works against those goals.

This not a wise or feasible plan. Instead of fostering growth, it will cause a huge gap between "star names" who can fill seats and justify the inevitably high ticket prices and thosev yard working hut lesser known artists who will shut out because they lack the celebrity status to sell expensive tickets. Wake up Equity. You are not listening to the members in the 99 AEA community who will be kost affected. What ever happened to compromise and why was the alternate tiered scale pkan ignored? Whose interests do you serve?
