Governor Haslam,

We urge you to please veto HB508.

HB508, written by the corporate gun lobby, leaves cities with three choices:

Spend tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to purchase metal detection devices and hire security personnel for municipality-owned properties including public transportation, government buildings, public venues, zoos, fairgrounds, and more

Risk being sued by gun rights membership organizations for TRIPLE legal fees.

Allow guns in these places, despite the public safety concerns voiced by law enforcement and mayors.

This bill is the most expansive and potentially the most expensive gun law ever passed by our legislature. The Tennessee Transportation Association calls the bill "fiscally and operationally impossible" and estimates that the bill's new security requirements could cost the four large urban public transit systems $3.8 million in one-time costs and $36 million in yearly costs.

Over the last several years, our state has continued to loosen our already lax gun laws. During that time, Tennesseans continued to be injured and killed by bullets. Last year, both Memphis and Nashville broke homicide records. Leaders in our state must consider the unintended consequences of continuing to pass laws that weaken our gun laws. Please listen to the stakeholders - law enforcement and local governments - and veto this bill.
