No one can argue that the best time to learn a second language is when children are young, not middle school or high school. The district should be looking at expanding the number of children that can participate in this and the Spanish immersion programs, not cutting the program.

My wife and I bought a house in Fitchburg because of the VAIS. We have two sons and will enroll them both. If the contract is not renewed we are leaving the state.

I recently moved to the Verona area and was excited to see the VAIS Charter school as an option for my future children. Now that I am pregnant with my first, I have been looking forward to enrolling my child in the charter school not only to improve his or her academic development and cultural awareness, but also to educate my child about his or her own heritage, as my father is from Taiwan and primarily speaks Mandarin Chinese. I believe this school is important for my children to connect with their family's culture and value diversity in our community.

My sister-in-law was one of the founding members who saw a vision for VAIS in Wisconsin. The goal to bring diversity to our community and state was met if not exceeded. It would be unfortunate that the Charter would end so soon after it began. Ultimately, the kids who want to learn Mandarin suffer because they won't have an opportunity to explore a different language and culture just like Spanish, German and French in years past.

We have three students in the VAIS program and couldn't be happier with the education they are receiving. Our 5th grader has become conversationally fluent in Mandarin and we witness her use of Mandarin in conversations with native speakers. We are excited for the future of not only our children but all VAIS students to see how they will use their unique skill set in the coming years. We encourage the Verona Area School District to renew the VAIS charter to continue this unique opportunity.

Please don't continue to limit educational opportunities for students. Education is becoming increasingly data driven - let the positive data of this school speak and allow this school to be a model for others. Our children deserve the diverse and positive opportunities!

Why would you want to shut down a school that is doing so well? The students are doing excellent and the teachers are outstanding. Keep the school running. It is a great addition to Verona school district.

People learn foreign languages best when they start at a very early age. Verona is very lucky to have a school that is preparing students to work in a world in which the Chinese are increasingly important.

I do think the VAIS Charter should be Renewed as immersion is a great opportunity not only for languages and cognition development but also for developing students to grow as globally competent citizens especially as U.S economic and political connections to China become increasingly intertwined.
