Exposure to a second language, of such strategic importance, is vital to the future. VAIS is a true example of a "forward thinking" stance towards the world, from the heart of the Midwest.

My three children -- all now adults -- attended the French Immersion School in Milwaukee, a public school operated by Milwaukee Public Schools. The immersion experience was invaluable to them and has contributed to their success in life in immeasurable ways. It would be a huge mistake to eliminate this important program in our community.

Allowing the opportunity for elementary school students to have language immersion at the age when their minds are most receptive to this learning is a great use of educational resources. Please don't take this wonderful thing

My great-grandson is attending VAIS charter school and is learning Mandarin Chinese. I think this is a wonderful learning experience for him to learn at a young age.

I am from Japan and know how important it is to learn another language. My 5-year-old grandson just started kindergarten in the VAIS program that teaches Mandarin Chinese. He is so excited to tell us the new things he learns in his school and we are proud that he is learning so quickly. I hope this charter will be renewed so that he can continue learning Mandarin and also so that his baby sister can have the same opportunity when she starts school in a couple more years.

The earlier children start to learn a language the more easily and quickley they master it. Immersion is the best way to learn to SPEAK a foreign language. If we want to compete and remain a prominent country we must have people who speak Chinese. I would think the mental rigors of learning Chinese might spill over to mastering other skills and subject matters. The self confidence children gain from mastering new skills is a sure thing. Parents should have the choice to provide their children with the opportunity to participate in bilingual education. We are a nation of immigrants and this type of education will benefit them on multiple levels: educationally,sociologically and in the area of future employment. The VAIS school is preparing children to be global citizens in tomorrow's world.
This past summer I had the opportunity to take my granddaughter who attends VAIS to her swim meet. To keep "track" of what event number,"heat" number and lane number she had to "know" she wrote the three categories on her forearm. Guess what, she wrote it all in Chinese without even giving it a second thought! I discovered that when I checked her arm for accuracy! She is six years old and had recently completed kindergarten.

I strongly endorse the renewal of the VAIS Charter School. My nephew, who is already bilingual in English and Japanese, attends the school as a kindergarten student. What strikes me is how learning a third language (Mandarin) at this young age has helped an already gifted child thrive even more, especially in terms of his ability to think critically. Also, students who attend language immersion schools at the elementary level are shown to have higher rates of achievement into their later years, especially in literary (e.g., Cobb, Vega, & Kronauge, 2008; Wayne & Collier, 2002). VAIS provides such a significant service to the community and young children.

Our niece goes to VAIS and has been thriving there. Our own daughter had the benefit of going to the Milwaukee German Immersion School and is fluent in German in an english-speaking household. Immersion programs are powerful contributors to a multi-cultural society. It would be short-sighted to end the program.

Our two granddaughters have experienced an excellent education at the Verona Area international school. We strongly encourage you to continue this program.
