SSB recoupment from Disabled Veterans is a ridiculous situation. Punishing Veterans for getting injured, maimed or sick from Military service after giving them a separation bonus is a real hardship on Veterans and should have never occurred.

I also received a SSB in 1992 and it seems that the VA is going to recoup this payment even though all of my disabilities came AFTER when I was in the Army Reserves.

I served over 11 years and they would not let me reenlist during the drawdown stating my MOS and Pay Grade was over strength and I had over 10 years service so I was not allowed to change my MOS to continue my service for retirement.

I received VSI in 1992 and in 2006-2007 involuntary recalled for OIF. WAS wounded and now receive 50% VA compensation. No more VSI. The law needs edited. I was awarded for the OIF service only.

I'm in the same situation. Is disgusting and disgrace to our disabled Veterans. It was a benefit to help with the transistion to civilian life and the government now wants it back from the people who need it the most. Twenty years later.

WHY is my disability payment connected to getting cheated out of my retirement. Our govt. spends that amount in seconds

Separated in 1994 received SSB for my time served and to leave early due to the draw down of military services. I started to receive VA benefits in 2008. The VA missed that I received SSB payment until 2016 they then started the repayment of the compensation.

I totally agree with this petition.SSB is not a disability payment. The D.O.D and V.A.are two separate departments

I was like Diane Morrison. I was asked to "leave" for the sake of the Armed Forces. I do not remember anyone saying, pointing out or otherwise telling me that if I accept this SSB payment that I would be giving up any claims to any Disability Entitlement that I had coming to me. Now some 20 years after I get out and I am drawing disability for injuries I received, they notified me that they were recouping that SSB money. And guess what(?) they did. They completely stopped payments to me and in a time when that money was over 33% of my income. I have written a letter to my Congressman and placed an appeal over 15 months ago and still have not heard anything from them. They are currently not paying me and I am out of work due to my disabilities and will probably have to return my house back to the bank. I am in financial troubles and will more than likely stay there. It is outrageous that the Government can just do what ever they want without looking at the consequences. The VA is out of scope and needs to be torn down and rebuilt starting with ALL MANAGEMENT!!

I was diagnosed with a 100% TOTAL & PERMINANT SERVICE CONNECTED disability resulting from radiation exposure causing colon cancer in 2004. I was assigned to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) as an Engineering Research and Development Officer for over 3 years in the mid 1980’s. The NTS was designated a Special Exposure Cohort (SEC) Site in 2010. A SEC classification means that if you worked there for over 250 days and came down with one of the specified types of cancer you were presumptively compensated for disability due to radiation exposure. As a matter of fact if I was a DOE employee or contract employee I would have gotten a check from the Federal Government for $150,000, no questions asked under the Energy Employees Occupational Injury Compensation Program (EEOICP) Act. Since I wore the uniform had to go thru the VA. After a three year battle they finally rated me. Now, DFAS is recouping part of my VSI. My VSI was not retirement. It was an incentive!! Check out the 2015 Press Release from Sen Warner (Virginia) regarding SSB/VSI recoupment. http://www.warner.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/mobile/pressreleases?ContentRecord_id=049459AC-DE01-4826-B50D-ACE8041AF0BA

They are currently taking around 1300 of my Army disability retirement. I was forced to medical retired before my planned retirement due to injuries suffered in combat. I was not allowed to returned to my civilian job because of my injuries, yet the Army paid me by taking 1300 of my disability retirement.

I'm currently being rated and I'm astonished that this is allowed. my under standing when I got out in 1992 and received payment was I being reimbursed to terminate my carrer early at the benefit of the government so they may drawdown. I can say wow if this occurs.

I served 8 years and received the SSB back in 1992. 10% disability and no check in sight. the double standards this Government shows us is unbelievable. not only do they want to recoup the money it takes forever just to get the disability we deserve.. SGT US Army....
